Eczema and now spotty rash...?

DD is really suffering with eczema at the moment in all the usual places. She had antibiotics two weeks ago which cleared up some infected skin but she is still very itchy and sore. Over the last 24-48 hours things have escalated and she has a fairly widespread spotty rash (centred on the itchy areas but spreading) which looks almost like insect bites or a viral rash. She was at the GP yesterday who suggested carrying on with our normal routine but the spots have escalated since then. Has anyone experienced this sort of change? Obviously we will be back to GP Monday if it does not improve. DD is otherwise ok (no fever for example) but is feeling worried. She's 10yo. Any advice?

Bump, anyone? I'm hoping she seems better in the morning.

Replying to myself here, but still looking for information... So after the above post the GP sent us to hospital where we were prescribed anti-virals in case of herpes skin infection. She has gradually got better but not completely. We were back at the GP again yesterday (almost 3 weeks later) as DD still getting some new spots and I think a self-limiting viral infection would have cleared by now. GP has prescribed another course of antibiotics and said to come back in a few days if no improvement. I've tried to read online about rashes caused by bacterial skin infection, but I'm not sure it fits? DD has a wide spread itchy rash which looks like little insect bites or similar. A few of the spots develop a small "head" but most do not. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience of anything like this? GP wanted to take a swab but DD broke down in tears, worried it will hurt. Any tips for persuading her to go through with this? It will be the only next step if no improvement....

Heres a bump. Hopefully you'll get answers soon. Eczema is hell on earth.

Do you have a picture? My son had eczema herpeticum. I called the gp who said he doesn't need to go in for a rash (it started off tiny on his leg) but I was worried so asked if I could bring him in anyway.. got told to go straight to a&e. Spent a few hours there and was given oral antibiotics and told to come back in the morning. When we got back in the morning it was a lot worse and the consultant said it was way beyond oral antibiotics. He was kept in for 3 days with a cannula for antibiotics every 4 hours. He was really ill and covered. It's awful. My son was 1 at the time, he is now nearly 4. How old is your dd?

I think that rash could be fungal. Try a small amount of Canesten on some of it and see what happens. If it’s fungal keep applying it, for two weeks after it’s cleared. If it isn’t fungal, the Canesten won’t touch it but will do no harm.

Could it be infected exczema?

Sorry, just seen she's 10!

Hi another mom of an eczema sufferer here. I'm quite shocked that no swab has been done in the first instance. It's so important so they know exactly what infection they are treating so you can get the right treatment. From your description it does sound like herpeticum (hope I spelt that right) which is viral and can turn quite nasty so if your little one develops a fever etc go straight to A&E.

The trouble is without the swab you could be treating a fungal infection with an antibiotic which will make it worse.

Hope it gets better really soon x

Ah thanks for the replies! I'm reluctant to post a picture - I'll see if I can crop one maybe. But it's all over her front and back, back of legs and some on arms. Suspected Eczema Herpeticum was why we were at the hospital a few weeks ago, but she was not in any way ill, and the anti-virals have not touched it, plus none of the doctors were convinced that's what it was. So I think we can rule that out. No-one has mentioned possible fungal infection. I may be able to find a bit of caneston to try out on a small section. Obviously we will be going ahead with the antibiotics as well as prescribed.

Anyone have any advice about making the swab less of a scary prospect for DD?

Update: the antibiotics seem to be working! I really hope this is the end of it, at least for now!
