6 year old eye test - worried about Cyclopentolate eye drops

My little boy has a test on Monday and I am nervous reading the side effects. I believe these drops dilate the pupils but I am worried because my mother in law had an adverse reaction to drops to make the pupils smaller (opposite of dilation I know) at the weekend when she went for laser surgery she was vomiting and had a terrible head ache.

I'm sure my little one will be ok but I am terrified the drops will make him poorly as says can cause palpitations and feeling disorientated.

Anyone have a little one having these and been ok?

Ds who is 4 and a half had them a few weeks ago. He was absolutely fine, no side effects whatsoever. A couple of his friends have had them too and as far as I know, no issues.

dementedpixie · 11/11/2019 16:42

Both dd and ds have had them with no adverse effects

Sorensmum · 11/11/2019 16:43

Dd had to have them regularly as she had glasses from 18 months old and her eye tests involved the drops until age 7/8ish

Sorensmum · 11/11/2019 16:49

@dementedpixie do they cause any issues for her

No she never had any issues. Just makes their eyes sensitive afterwards as the pupils are dilated. Some people use sunglasses after the test

@dementedpixie thanks x

My almost 6 year old ds has had these several times and has always been fine, no side effects. When he's had them they usually give the drops and then we have to wait 20 minutes or so for them to work before he has an eye test. The only time he got upset was when we were left waiting 45 minutes as there was nothing for him to do to distract himself (he doesn't like doing drawing or anything straight after them)so I wished I'd taken more sweets!

The drops for laser are notorious for causing side effects, but the dilating drops are completely different and don’t cause headaches. Some children get flushed/rosy cheeks after, some feel a bit sleepy or spaced out. Some have no effect at all!

My two year old has had these and no adverse reaction at all. He looked a bit weird for a but but that was all.

Thanks ladies for reassuring me I do not think I would have paid much attention to the side effects if my mother in law did not have a terrible reaction. I think my poor father in law thought when was a goner she was that violently ill

My 16 month old had them. Her eyes were sensitive when we left the hospital (it was the daylight) but that wore off quite quickly. Absolutely no other side effects.

I’ve put them in hundreds of children’s eyes. I’ve had a couple of children go a bit hyperactive, but no other side effects. My own children have had them a few times as well. You often can’t get a accurate prescription without them.

They are very different than pilocarpine which does have a high complication rate.

Both my daughters have had them multiple times and were just fine! Just keep them out of direct sunlight for a bit after. They weren't best pleased having them out in, but no side effects at all

Hi,my son had eye cancer and has these drops at every check up. No adverse reactions at all. I also have them for diabetes check ups. Take some sunglasses for him to wear and tell him he can't play on phone/read mags etc while there. They wear off gradually, please don't worry,he will be fine.
