Chicken Pox from hell

My 6 year old hasn’t chicken pox. This is the third day now. SHe has them everywhere. Head. Mouth. Eye lids. But the worst part is between her legs.

She is quite distressed with it. Stingy and sore. I’ve done calamine, lots of baths, oats in bath, paracetamol, let her sit with nothing on to get air to it.

Any more I can do? I feel so bad for her x

Calamine dries the spots do makes them more prone to scabbing/itching. Try to get some Virasoothe and slather her in it. Lovely cooling gel. My twins had chickenpox really badly, not one scar between them. Hope she’s on the mend soon!

moreismore · 09/11/2019 20:39

Have you tried poxyclin (spelling?) mousse or similar? Or virasoothe is another one I think.

madeyemoodysmum · 09/11/2019 20:40

Bless her. One thing that really worked for dd was aloe Vera gel rubbed on every hour She was very unhappy for 3 days and I really had no sleep. It was the worst illness we have ever been through but I guess that makes us lucky.

Good luck and just don’t do much yourself as you will be exhausted too.

woogal · 09/11/2019 20:41

Calamine lotion in the bath, piriton to help with the itching, slather in virasoothe and give calpol every 4 hours.

Chicken pox is the pits.

Chickenpoxnamechange · 09/11/2019 20:44

Can you put Virasoothe between her legs? They’re right inside her vulva... honestly I could cry for her 😭

Another vote for Oral Piriton or Certrizine.

NotYourHolidayDick · 09/11/2019 22:34

I'm sure you're aware but NO IBUPROFEN. Sorry nothing more helpful to add. Poor kid

marezeedotes · 09/11/2019 22:39

Oat baths saved our sanity - loads of oats tied inside a cut off tights leg, smush it in a coolish bath until the water is milky, then use to gently sponge the worst areas. Worked like a miracle for DD (4).

perkele · 09/11/2019 22:40

Bicarbonateof soda solution is incredibly soothing.

NauseousNancy · 09/11/2019 22:42

Pharmacist gave us an antihistamine, and said no calamine as can make the itching worse. She was pretty covered in them but never really scratched them, so seemed to do the trick!

Oats baths were good too!

Seeline · 09/11/2019 22:46

Luke warm bicarb baths. When my 2 yo had them she had several a day. Really helped.

Piriton syrup to help with the itching.

Ice lollies to numb mouth and throat.

It is horrible when they have it badly.

QuilliamCakespeare · 09/11/2019 22:48

Piriton syrup is the only thing that helped my two. We slapped on the virasoothe but it didn't seem to help much. We did oaty baths too which took their mind of it, if nothing else.

It seems rediculous to me that there is a perfectly reliable vaccination for this that the UK actively chooses not to make available to the population.

Fithles · 10/11/2019 00:21

The vaccine is available in the UK, it just isn't free.

Imnotaslimjim · 10/11/2019 00:42

If you're worried I would consider seeing the GP. My DD had them age 3, she had one on her eyeball and several on her vulva. The latter were very angry looking and GP put her on antivirals to stop it getting any worse.

TheFairyCaravan · 10/11/2019 00:54

Bicarb baths saved us when DS2 had really bad Chicken pox. We went through tubs of the stuff.

I'd consider seeing the GP too if she's really distressed. Just let them know why you're coming so they can isolate you from the other people in the waiting room.

I hope she's feeling better soon

OctoberLovers · 10/11/2019 00:57

Could you use sudocream for inside of her?

managedmis · 10/11/2019 00:59

What are bicarb baths? Teaspoon bicarb in a bath?

I saw a story online about a mum using original head and shoulders when her little one had chicken pox and it apparently stopped the itching.

Nat6999 · 10/11/2019 01:08

Piriton, bicarb or oat baths, virasooth & put some kind of moisturiser over the top to stop her scratching. If she is in nappies, could you put them in the fridge or freezer so they are really cool to sooth the itching. If the spots are already there, nothing can really stop the process of the infection, it is more a case of keeping them clean & free from infection. I had them really badly like this when I was 12, I hadn't an inch of my body that wasn't covered, I can understand how painful it is & because she is too small to understand makes it even harder. If the Piriton makes her sleepy, it might help to let her sleep as much as possible until the worst of the itching eases off.

Chickenpoxnamechange · 10/11/2019 12:07

Thanks for all suggestions. She’s asleep npw. Lots more spots come out. She’s still very sore. Just having to comfort her. If still bad tomorrow I’ll get her to the GP x

My dd (5) had it a few months ago and the ones between her legs got infected by day 3. She needed antibiotics. Apparently spots in those places can get easily infected due to moist/sweaty skin.
