7 month old has tonsillitis - help

My 7 month old DS has had a rough few days. We’ve been to the GP, walk in centre and finally A&E when he ended up dehydrated. It started with a viral rash and fever then he was refusing all fluids and food, we couldn’t even force it in, he wasn’t weeing and his soft spot was sinking in. He was close to being put on a drip but he finally managed a bit of fluid in hospital so we were discharged. They discovered that he has tonsillitis and that is why he won’t swallow. They have given us a throat spray but wouldn’t give antibiotics as they said that it’s viral! He’s still not drinking many fluids at all. Today he’s managed two fromage frais and a few sips of water and milk, more than he managed yesterday but I’m still sick with worry. We’re syringing some in and blowing on his face to make him swallow but it’s so painful for him and I’m finding it so distressing to see him like this. He’s weeing more today and seems happier but how long is this likely to go on for? Does anyone have any tips on how to get more fluid in him?

Ice lollies, frozen frubes etc. Keep an eye on his nappies though and take him back if he's not making wet ones. Better to have an NG tube than to become dehydrated.

Poor little thing.

Ice lollies or vanilla ice cream. Is the spray helping? If so as soon as its been used try to make the most of it by giving a teaspoon of water every 5 minutes while the sprays in effect.

Oh and of course calpol and nurofen and distraction, favourite cartoons or music on etc, favourite toys/teddies out.

Poor baby it's awful. My DS had this a month or so ago. He was given antibiotics because he had white puss spots on the back of his throat and i was told this means its bacterial so needed antibiotics. Did they manage to have a good look at your DS throat?
The antibiotics kicked in with 24hr for my DS and was loads better after a few days I his the medicine in his Yoghurt.

To get fluids down him I gave him weak juice and ice lollies. Ice cream and 'mummy's drink' so I pretended to have a drink from a different cup to his and then he would want some.

Thank you all for your advice. I’ve managed to get a bit more milk in him this evening and he’s had 15oz today in total. He usually has 25oz, so not brilliant, but much better than the previous 3 days! I’ve been having to time the nurofen just before he naps and bottle feeding him while he’s half asleep. I can tell it’s hurting him to swallow because he keeps hitting his face in his sleep while drinking it :( he sucks on ice lollies for a little while but after a minute gets fed up and won’t have any more but he’s had the odd sip of water too. Hopefully he’s going to be on the mend now, I’m just worried of it lasting ages. I would do anything to take the pain for him! No, the hospital didn’t have a good looking at all because DS was writhing around and screaming, I felt like they were just in a rush to get us out of there.

How is he today op?

Moonshine160 · 29/10/2019 11:17

@Nogodsnomasters he’s much better thank you. Not 100% yet but pretty much back to eating and drinking normally. I’m still giving him nurofen every few hours because if I don’t then he will struggle to drink his bottles. I said that I would do anything to take he illness from him and it seems that my wish has come true! I’ve come down with an awful virus myself.

Definitely frozen frubes. They were a life saver when my baby has tonsillitis. Basically give them anything soft and cool even if it’s not what you would normally be happy with them eating. Ice cream, custard, milkshakes etc.

Glad to hear he's on the mend, so sorry he's passed it to you! Be prepared for many years of that unfortunately. My ds5 passed scarlet fever to me this year, he was fine after 2-3 days of antibiotics, but nooo I was hospitalised 🙄.
