Please advise, terrified that dd may have diabetes

I really hope I'm just being paranoid here but I'm in such a state tonight over this.
Dd is almost 5, she is overweight at almost 4st Sad (she has always been quite chubby, even as a baby but has gradually gained more over the past 6-12 months, we have noticed it and are taking action, know what to do going forward etc)
She has had some secondary bed wetting for the past 6 months, I put it down to her drinking too much water before bed so stopped her having drinks past 6pm, this works some nights and doesn't others.
Recently she has been saying she is itchy down below, and over the weekend said that it hurt when she had a wee.
I looked into utis in children and read that bedwetting is also a symptom (never knew) so had her at the docs today, doctor examined her (all looked fine) and I have some pots to send in a urine sample in the morning.
I've been looking into more reasons for bedwetting in children, one of them is diabetes and I think because we've just came to the realisation that we need to do something about her weight gain and now panicking that she had diabetes and that we've caused it by letting her get so overweight. Sad
I really did think it was a UTI but now not so sure as she's been peeing fine today and hasn't complained of any pain. So now my mind is saying diabetes and I'm so worried. I can't do anything until the morning but I'll ask the gp to test her urine for that also.
She's fine with in herself, happy and full of energy, rarely poorly, sleeps well, doesn't have a huge thirst or need for urination.
Really she seems fine other than this occasional bedwetting and pain/itching when weeing.
Does it sound like diabetes??
Sorry for the ramble but I have pretty bad anxiety so going through the roof with worry.
I know I just need to see what the doc says tomorrow but just needed to talk it through with someone Sad

hi i think from what you say its unlikely. my understanding is that in children of that age the symptoms appear reasonably severely from the onset.
ie thirsty . lethargy. weight loss
try not to worry

han01uk · 21/10/2019 23:00

Hi I have type 1 diabetes and really nothing you describe sounds like a child with type 1. She would be losing weight rapidly, have constant thirst, lethargy, feeling generally rubbish and have no energy. While urinating more and bed wetting is a sign,it's because of the constant thirst. Sounds more like the weight is a separate issue and perhaps she is brewing a uti. Hopefully you can ease the worry with another GP visit but certainly doesn't jump out as type 1 diabetes to me.

stillawakeat4amagain · 21/10/2019 23:02

I don't think she does sound diabetic (type 1 myself) ask the gp to test her urine though, even though she is over weight that don't cause type 1 and type 2 is mostly older people she would be very young to have it. I started off drinking about 6/7 litres a day no energy sleeping a lot and going to the toilet more often. But just get her checked for piece of mind.

Fuzzywig · 21/10/2019 23:02

The doc would have listened to the symptoms you described and I am guessing s/he doesn’t think it’s diabetes. Still get a check tomorrow to put your mind at rest.

Pinksequinedhat · 21/10/2019 23:28

Ah thanks all.
That makes me feel better.
I'm just worried that we've done damage as I know her weight gain is our fault (after all, she doenst buy the food) it's just came on so gradually and she's always been on the bigger side, she's tall too so it was like we didn't see it until it was an issue? So that together with the bedwetting has made ke jump to the diabetes conclusion. (And too much googling which I know never helps!!)
You're right though I guess the doc would have mentioned it if he was concerned? He was more leaning towards a type of thrush rather than a uti and didn't even mention diabetes.. I will ask for that test in the morning though to put our minds at rest.
If anything this has scared us into taking real action about her weight!

While children can develop type 2 diabetes, it is incredibly rare, particularly in one as young as you dd. It doesnt sound like diabetes which in young children normally presents with increased thirst, weight loss, tiredness as well as increased passing urine. IF it was diabetes it would be far more likely type 1, which has nothing to do with weight and absolutely would've be your fault! But it really doesnt sound like that! When the gp dips her urine to test for infection it will also test for glucose and ketones which is what would show up if she had diabetes.

Being itchy down below could also be worms?

Fuzzywig · 24/10/2019 07:03

I hope your GP has managed to reassure you and carry out the test.

Re the bedwetting there is a wonderful site called ERIC which might be able to help.

Pinksequinedhat · 24/10/2019 10:37

Hello, thanks for the replys.
The nurse dipped dds urine and nothing came back but it has been sent to the lab for further testing.
Re worms, I did think that so went in her room during the night with a light and couldn't see any.
She hasn't had an accident for the past two nights, I do wonder if it's just because she drinks too much water close to bed time and she's such a deep sleeper? She gets up sometimes and doesn't others, it's very hit and miss.
She is still complaining of being itchy and ive been using sudocreme which is helping.
The GP did say it was maybe a type of thrush/irritation which is really common so maybe just that?
