Newborn poo / nappy rash saga

I posted recently about the fact my DD poos all the time and she now has a very sore bottom with red open sores.

She’s been prescribed and anti-fungal / anti-septic combo cream to help shift it. The pharmacist advised leaving it on for 30mins before applying a barrier cream.

This would be fine except I don’t think my DD goes 30mins without pooing. I’ve just applied it. We had 10 mins of waiting with nappy off, she sneezed and did a poo. So I’ve had to wipe her and reapply.

Every single time I look her nappy is dirty. She seems to do lots of little poos in between big ones. We are changing her every 1-2 hours but this doesn’t seem to be enough.

What can I do? I am at my wits end.

For info she is 4.5 weeks old and EBF.

Please help. I feel so sorry for her.

When they are first born they poo automatically but then they need to learn to poo. At first babies both strain to poo but clench the muscles around their anus. It takes them a couple of weeks to figure out how to poo.

Try using washable wipes instead of cotton wool and water wipes. (Nicer on skin)

Washable nappies if you are not already. (Nicer on skin)

And change her whenever she wees/poos if you can - yes, it's a lot of changing but minimises the amount of time wee/poo is on her skin.

And look after yourself, this isn't for ever Flowers

I don’t know if anyone is still following this but I wanted to say thank you for your advice. We went dairy-free and it absolutely did the trick. DD now poos 1-2 times a day (instead of every 10 mins) and her nappy rash is completely healed as a result. We are using the Child’s Farm nappy cream now as it suits her skin (it’s lovely if anyone hasn’t tried it before) but the main thing has been that she no longer poos constantly so her skin gets a break Smile

I’m so glad to hear it. My two were both dairy intolerant. We are very lucky there’s so many decent alternative foods nowadays, although I never did find a decent cheese replacement.
