Can I see an ENT privately to see to DD foreign body up her nose?

Or do I have to sit in A&E for 4 hours only to be given an appt for next week?

We have insurance but haven't had to use it so far. How does it work?

Just go to A&E. I don't know how it works either but it will not be quicker to find someone privately and it doesn't require that.

there are private a and es and drop-ins in London - dunno where though.

when DS stuffed a pea up, I did the blowing into the mouth trick - never thought it would work - and like MAGIC out came the pea. Try that first??

It’ll probably take as long to find one and make an appointment and you have to pay than to just sit in a&e/minor ailments for a few hours could be more than 4 depending how you are triaged & how busy the unit is.
I doubt if she does have a foreign body it would be left for a week. But if she’s well take stuff for you both to do whilst you wait.

Previously experience of our local (children's a&e) when she had a foreign body in her ear. Waiting 4 hours to be seen followed by seeing various nurses who said they couldn't do anything. The ENT being paged twice and not bothering to turn up in the following 2 hours and a very stressed 3yo to"keep entertained" as well as other children and work commmitments to keep.
Then they gave us an appt to see ENT 8 days later.

I really don't want to repeat that and though just calling and ENT and making an appt would be simpler?

Ds put a tic tac up his nose. Gave him a tissue and he blew it out!

Gazelda · 09/10/2019 11:04

Try this -

Hold a finger against the unblocked nostril to close it off.
Get child to open their mouth then you cover their mouth with your own and give a good, hard, sharp blow. With a bit of luck, the pea/bead/bean/whatever will shoot out of the nostril and splat onto your cheek along with a great lump of snot (unpleasant experience).

If not, I suspect the quickest solution would be a&e

Check your insurance referral procedure. Then follow it and see how long to get an appointment. Some will require a GP referral, some will require you to attend A&E, some will not. No one here knows what policy you have, or when you might get an appointment.

Vinosaurus · 09/10/2019 11:21

You need to call your insurance provider helpline who can advise on the process - no one of us know what your policy covers.

And I seriously doubt that the ENT docs were "not bothered" to come and see your DC - more like they had higher priorities/rushed off their feet at the time.

The 'could t be bothered ENT Dr'could have been in theatres or seeing to really sick patients.
I'm sorry but a foreign body up a nose is not life threatening but inconvenient.
Go to A&E and then while away the wait by posting on how aweful the NHS are.

ENT being paged twice and not bothering to turn up in the following 2 hours

Yes, because I’m sure the ENT doctor was just sitting in the break room with their feet up and couldn’t be arsed to come to A&E Hmm

lemonloaf · 09/10/2019 13:08

exactly my point. This is not an emergency and so I don't see why I'd sit in a&e for hours when I could book an appt to be seen at an appointed time.

It depends what is up their nose - my GS went so many times with foreign bodies in various places they should have named a bed after him.

Anyway - tictac will dissolve no worries.
Blocking the nostril the item is not in and blowing into their mouth works - this worked around 15 times for us!!

But one time he had a sultana up there and that had swelled in the damp and he needed sedation and ENT surgeon to remove it.

Use your common sense on what is up there and how urgent it may be.
