Hello,
My daughter (7 weeks old) has a misshaped forehead, it bulges on the right hand side. Has anyones little one had something similar, what happened as they grew? Going for 8 week check up in 10 days and will show the GP.
Thanks from a worried mum

Has it always bulged? Was it caused by delivery?

Babies can have funny shaped heads for a while after birth, but if this has appeared suddenly you should get it checked ASAP.

I spoke to the gp and health visitor about my baby’s odd shaped head when he was a few months old. From what I remember they suggested lots of tummy time (not much use for your baby, but my ds’ head was wonky at the back) and a wait and see approach.
He is 12 now and keeps his hair long as his head is still bulgy at one side.

Yes my son had this a baby! On one side of his forehead. I got paranoid and stared at it lots. I mentioned it to the GP as he was being investigated generally for a large head (which included an ultrasound). That turned out to be genetic. I don’t remember the GP saying much about the bulge. I stared at DH lots at the time and concluded maybe it’s just the shape of his head. I had forgotten about it and have just checked and think it might still be slightly bulgy but I am not sure! He is six now and happily choosing a DVD Smile

He was born by ventouse. (But I have no idea if a factor).

Thank you for your response. I am hoping things will even out. I am not sure when it arrived.

I don't want to worry you but when my DD was born her head was misshapen and bulged at one side, I think they called it 'bossing'.
It turned out she had something called craniostynastosis (think that's how you spell it!) it happened because her skull fused too soon in parts and required surgery when she was 18 months old.
I would ask to be referred to the neurological paediatric team if I were you, just to rule it out at least.

That is what I am worried about. How big was the bulge on your daughter's head? Is she okay now? Any lasting effects? I will be discussing my concerns with the GP at my appointment x

Hi, my DS has this too. Was a result of always sleeping with his head facing in the same direction (stiff neck muscles). It’s vaguely noticeable still at 22 months but only to me. It’s got a lot better as he’s got older.

Spanz10 · 06/10/2019 11:46

@millstonegrit did your daughter still have her soft spot. The health visitor checked hers the other day and it is there. But her head is a lot smoother on the side where her forehead doesn't bulge, so the the skull could have fused early on that side.
Thanks

My son had a misshapen head when he was born. We were fobbed off for 9 months by GP's. He was diagnosed with Craniosynostosis on our 1st consultant visit, surgeries started at 15 months.

If you are still concerned then I would push for a referral to the neurosurgeons.

PullingMySocksUp · 06/10/2019 12:05

Can you check photos to see when it arrived?
Did you ask the health visitor about it?

If it hasn’t always been there I’d take her to the gp as soon as you can.

millstonegrit · 06/10/2019 13:01

Yes she did have the soft spot as it was only some of the parts that fused too soon. At first they said it was due to how she was positioned in the womb and that it would right itself. However they did an X-ray and I asked for a copy of the results which mentioned the condition so we insisted on being referred. She is now 13 and has a scar hidden by her hair, head shape is normal and no development delays or anything else. Try not to worry x

Spanz10 · 06/10/2019 18:37

Thanks ladies. @myColoursareblushandbashful I have shown my mother in law who was a midwife and she thinks it is due to position in the womb, but I am not sure. The bulge isn't massive so you might not notice it at first. She was very squashed up after a long delivery and I believe it has always been there @PullingMySocksUp. She is also a very sleepy baby, not sure if that is linked.
