Croup

I think my one year old has croup. She's been wheezing when she breathes since she woke at around ten, sometimes unsettled and a little panicky with a barking cough. She's asleep on me now, propped upright, wheezing a little in her sleep. Is there anything I need to be doing or do I just watch her? Her chest movements are very obvious but not massively sucking in or anything like that.

Also, should I be able to leave her with my mother in law to go to work tomorrow or am I likely to need to take the day off?

Try some steam
And baby olbas rub

It s usually worse at night so may be ok in day

Going out into cold air often helps. In my experience they are fine in the day, it’s the night that is horrible and is worst for first two nights. If breathing gets laboured or you’re worried, do go to a and e. They can give steroids to relieve swelling.

Cold air. Wrap her in duvet and go and sit outside for a bit.

I would ring 111 for advice tonight

We found this helpful when DS had croup

Hope she’s feeling better soon OP.

Mine had this a few weeks ago. Treatment was a single dose of steroids from GP. She really struggled to breathe when it first came on, I was very close to calling 999 but she calmed down, GO said that was right thing to do

Thanks everyone. She's still managing ok, just woke up fretful again though. Raining buckets so we didn't get to go outside but stood in the doorway which was helpful. Breastfeeding also seems to be helping.
