Back pain in a 4 year old.

My little boy (4 years 6 months) has been complaining of back pain for about 4 days. I've also noticed him sitting awkwardly, as though he can't get comfortable (especially leaning over to his right side when sitting in the car seat). He's had a bit of a cold this week, but nothing major. No temperature or anything like that. He has some development delay and is unable to tell me whether he's done something to it. Tonight it seems to have really bothered him. He kept lying on the floor and trying lots of ways to get comfy, then cried about it so I gave him calpol. He insisted on going to bed at 6.20 (so unlike him) and then woke very upset at 7.50.

Any ideas what could cause back pain in such a young child? I have anxiety and my mind is going through the worst case scenario. Think I'm going to try and get a gp appointment for tomorrow.

GP is a good idea. It could potentially be a UTI.
You could try ibuprofen as well as Calpol in case he's pulled a muscle playing too hard Wink
Hop he feels better soon

Back pain is very unusual in children and always needs checking out - take him to your GP

Gp tomorrow

OK. Thank you all. I was a bit concerned I might be overreacting because of the anxiety, but I also thought back pain is unusual in such a young child. I'll book him in tomorrow. Thankfully my surgery are amazing about seeing children quickly.

Took him to the doctor this morning. She can feel a knot of muscle in his back so has prescribed a couple of days of ibuprofen and then we have to stop and see what happens. Also took a urine sample in case he has a UTI. Thanks for the advice.
