Ptosis surgery

Hi my 8year old son has had ptosis since birth as have other family members. We have been told if we want to go ahead with surgery he is at a good age now to do so. It’s covers his pupil slightly but also we are considering surgery for cosmetic reasons as it’s starting to bother him a little.

We have been told he has such a weak muscle in the eyelid he needs a brow suspension with the tendon taken from his thigh. My concerns are the recovery for the leg. The consultant said it wasn’t an issue but I have read other people have different opinions. Also the fact he won’t be able to close his eye at night and it won’t look symmetrical when he looks down is another concern for me. Also worried the final look will end up looking worse than it does now if they can’t get it right.

Anyone else who has experienced this, you comments would be appreciated

Hi. No help i’m afraid. But my 2.5yo DS has ptosis too. Our GP said a few weeks ago that some surgeons suggest it gets corrected when younger, some older, and to get him checked again when he is five.

Can I ask what you have been told in the past please? How severe was it when he was 2.5? Has it got worse with age? My DS’ is more noticeable when he is tired. But people say they wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t mention it.

I think the only way they would consider it at a younger age is if it’s covering the pupil affecting their vision. They like to wait as long as possible as that way it’ll achieve better results. We had been told to wait till he is 16 at times if it wasn’t affecting his vision. But age 7 is when they find they do it if the child feels self conscious about it.

I would say our sons severity went up and down. Some appointments it was covering his pupil slightly and others not at all. I’d say it only got worse as he got older in the fact that from age 5 he needed patching and glasses where he didn’t need those at a younger age. His also is worse when tired

Thanks for the info. The doctors haven’t said much at all! I’d feel exactly the same as you with your concerns. I hope it all goes well and you get some reassurance from someone who has been through it. I feel so sad for DS at the thought of him getting worse. Trying to stay positive that it might not!
