Calpol every day!

My DS is nearly 7 months old and he has been teething now for about 8 solid weeks which has gotten worse over the past 3 weeks. He is miserable day in day out. His first tooth erupted through the bottom gum which gave him about a day of relief, then the one next to it has just come through and I hoped he would have a little break for a while but the top two are now on their way. He cries so much and prods at his mouth and for the last 3 weeks he has had calpol every day. I have tried teething powders which don’t help, dentinox, anbesol liquid which works for a few mins then that’s it, Amber anklet which did nothing, teething toys, the only thing that seems to give him some relief is calpol but surely having this every day for 3 weeks can’t be good for him? I make sure he only had one 2.5ml dose a day, usually this is in an evening but if he’s inconsolable from it in the day then he will have it during the day and not the evening but I’m just worried about how much he’s having and how long the pain might still go on for. Does anyone else have any other suggestions that might ease the pain for him?

Stop the Calpol! I know it’s hard when they’re teething, but even one dose a day for 3 weeks is not good for livers.

I used to freeze breastmilk/homemade smoothies for dd to gnaw on that helped with the pain.

Have you seen the GP to rule out anything else?

Ask the pharmacist for the facts ref calpol, ie If you were to give it to your son everyday for 2 years, could be very different to giving it for a couple of months.
Plus, you could alternate between calpol and kids ibruprofen , so effectively you’re cutting down the calpol by half.

When DD was teething, our GP said it's fine to give it every day if it's needed, as long as you don't exceed the dose. The 'see your GP if you need it for more than 3 days' warning is to remind you to get a problem checked out if it needs it. As I knew what the problem was, and only gave it when there was a need for pain relief, the doctor was quite happy.

@MustardScreams oh gosh, I’ve just googled. I will stop now definitely! I just can’t believe it’s been going on for so long it’s just one consecutive tooth after the next. Yes he’s been seen by a paediatrician for an unrelated matter and I asked him to have a look in case it was thrush or anything else and he says seems fine, just swollen top and bottom gums from teething.

@ozziewozzie thank you, I’ll look into the ibuprofen!

@ASqueakingInTheShrubbery thank you, I really don’t like to give him calpol if I can help it, wouldn’t be so bad if the teething stopped and started every few weeks but it’s just one straight after the other bless him. Did you find anything else helped?

if he is constantly teeting pls.take him to the dentist . they can give you great advice

troppibambini · 02/10/2019 09:38

Ibuprofen is much better for teething. Because it's an anti inflammatory it helps with the sore swollen gums.
Teething is crap. I hope he feels better soon.

I feel terrible now. For the first three years of her life, my youngest was on calpol all the time, mostly at night. She's right and still had chronic pain in her legs. When she was a baby she couldn't tell us what the pain was. The docs never told us about long-term usage effects.

Eight not right

Bol87 · 06/10/2019 10:15

Don’t worry. My GP said calpol was fine everyday while teething. We had weeks of giving our daughter calpol everyday last winter. She alternated from teething to a fever from an illness back to teething! I was a bit concerned so asked the GP who said unless it’s taken for years everyday, there’s nothing to worry about at all. So I didn’t. No harm done.

Sunflower160 · 06/10/2019 10:44

@Bol87 thank you, that’s reassuring. I also spoke to a pharmacist when I bought some nurofen who said that if he actually needs it (which he does) and I’m not just taking it as a precaution then not to worry if it’s just one dose a day. Like your DD our DS has either been teething or had a cold over the last month and his night sleeps have been horrendous, we are both exhausted. Teething gels, anbesol, powders etc they just don’t work and when it’s really bad he won’t even open his mouth to let me put a teething toy in. His bottom gum is so swollen, I just hope it passes soon.
