My son is 26 months old. He is always on the move. I would say his speech is delayed. He can say over 120 individual words but progress has been slow with 2-3 word phrases. I have noticed he misses his cons- eg he says ga for glass. His eye contact is fine, he understands what we ask of him and carry out tasks accordingly. But recently he has been very whiny and cries for almost everything. He has also become a very picky eater, I feel like he has rice phobia or something, he drops on the floor if I bring out rice. He looks malnourished to be honest. I try my best to offer him different breakfasts and snacks but I also had an operation and right now his constant whining, screeching, crying is driving me nuts! I know he suffers from blocked nose, I give him nasal spray 2/3 times a day. He has been a colic baby since birth, I give him antiflatulent. What else could be the problem?? I really need him to be my normal baby again. Please advise.

I'll be perfectly honest and say this sounds like a question for your GP.

(BTW he does not sound speech-delayed! He's little!)

Other than the potential weight issue, he sort of just sounds like a two year old. Would be worth getting him weighed properly and potentially use it as an opportunity to discuss other issues.

Discuss with your health visitor? They can be helpful. Smile

Ask gp to test for coeliac disease

His speech sounds OK and he's allowed not to like rice. Small children shouldn't have too much rice anyway (low levels of arsenic).
Did you have to leave him when you had your operation? That could have unsettled him.
The weight and digestive troubles do sound like a trip to the gp would be a good idea. He's not going to be happy if he under eats, has tummy ache and a blocked nose much of the time.

He's not going to be happy...

What kind of nasal spray are you giving him at that age?
Go to the drs for sure (as many times as necessary to get attention) you need to get to the bottom of this.

In all honesty, he sounds like a normal two year old! My daughter is 28 months & we have fits of crying/tantrums all day long, particularly when she doesn’t get her own way or something frustrates her. It’s a testing age at times! I have a group of mum friends with same aged children & we spend half our time WhatsApping about toddler whinging, crying & tantrums! Completely normal behaviour. They are pushing their boundaries & can’t fully communicate yet. 120 words is good, he’ll get there with sentences.

Fussy eating is also incredibly common at two. My daughter ate everything until she was about 22 months old. Then suddenly, one by one she started dropping food she’d eat. She’s now down to about 15 foods she’ll eat only - eggy bread, weatabix, toast, peanut butter, fish fingers, sausages, peas, chips & various fruit. She hates pasta with a passion, hates rice, cheese, yoghurt, sandwiches, pizza.. she’ll burst into tears if I offer them for a meal 🙄

Does he appear to be in pain when eating or is he just testing you? Two year olds realise they have a choice and can say no. That’s why they go fussy. Will he happily eat biscuits & chocolate but not main meals? In which case, there’s probably nothing wrong. He’d just rather eat sweet food! But if he’s lost a decent amount of weight & wont eat anything, then it’s more of a concern..

Yes....What Nasal spray is it? Some not suitable for small children
