Experience with movicol in 13 yr old with SN please??

Iv just found out my poorly 13 year old is completely chock full of poo. He’s been ill all year, has bloods and stool samples, severe diarrhoea and only find out yesterday after an X-ray he is severely impacted. Had already made a complaint through pals. He also has a prolapse so things have been very fraught.

I am very glad to hear it’s nothing sinister which was my fear all year so things could be much mush worse. However he has adult dose movicol to take for the next 4 weeks. I only have experience of a baby on movicol so please can anyone share some tips or experiences?

He has SN so I’m worried about how he will cope with this? The paed said 3 sachets Monday to Friday when he’s at school and 4-5 at the weekends. I queried this with the pharmacist as I said that was a lot andhe agreed. He said start on one sachet and see how he reacts to it. Iv never had movicol but I know its rank and I don’t know how to get that many sachets in him?! Paed said give to him in the morning but pharmacist say that’s ridiculous when he’s going to school as it will work once he gets there so I will be giving it to him when he gets home. He travels in a taxi to school so I don’t take him..... I can’t really drive him myself so that isn’t really an option.

Can anyone tell me how this is likely to affect him? He already has diarrhoea and I’m worried this will make it worse and he won’t be off the toilet and soiling himself? School have been great and spoken to him and given him a private toilet the kids don’t use and I will put spare pants and wipes in his school bag. Can anyone help advise me please? How do I get it in him if it’s rank??

So he hasn’t gone again since 5pm. Is that likely to be it for today?? Should I give it to him same time tomorrow?

Anyone there?! He hasn’t been since 5pm and want to go to school? He’ll be ok to go won’t he? I’m going to give him today’s dose same time as yesterday....

He should be fine to go to school. I used to have loads of children on movicol (teacher in an ASD base) and there was never usually a problem with soiling/overflow but we were always aware and there to help if needed. It isn’t an explosive clear out method so works over days/weeks.

Thank you. He went again before school this morning and said his belly is sore but ok. Haven’t had a call from school....

I’ll give him next dose when he’s home But the weekend he needs the bigger dose so I take it I give him that Friday when he’s home from school then Saturday and Sunday? Or will the big Sunday dose affect him at school Monday?

How is he now op?

Wonderingwhyme · 05/10/2019 06:37

Thanks for checking in, that’s kind of you. Seems fine. He had 3 sachets yesterday and that didn’t seem to make a difference. Today and tomorrow he will have 4 sachets. He says when he goes to the toilet it’s ‘an explosion’ but it seems more like porridge which I think is a good thing as he’s also said there are some bits that are harder in it. I haven’t kept him off school and we haven’t had any soiling etc. He’s not going to the toilet much at all really so I don’t know if it’s doing much yet? He generally goes about an hour or so after he takes the movicol and then goes in the morning and that’s it? Does that seem like not enough?

I think after the first day where he had the diarreah all afternoon was probably his big clear out day and now his bowel is adjusting to the medication to get more of a rhythm. Porridge consistency is better than water, it probably mean some of the hard blockage is shifting. Movical is it's a stool softner so if it's doing its job he won't pass very very hard stools because they'll have softened by the time he uses the loo. Sounds like things are moving in the right direction.

Wonderingwhyme · 05/10/2019 15:59

He’s had 4 today and hadn’t gone at all??

His bowel is getting used to them or he could be all cleared out already. Is his tummy still hurting?

Wonderingwhyme · 05/10/2019 16:39

He hasn’t said it hurts? I can’t see how he would be cleared that quick?i saw the X-ray and he was solid from top to bottom?

The only way to know for 100% is to request another xray to check again but if the diarreah (overflow) has stopped and the poo is closer to normal consistency and he's having a normal amount of movements (once or twice a day) then it sounds like it's done what's its meant to.

Wonderingwhyme · 06/10/2019 09:08

He went again in the evening and was the same, normalish poo followed by runny poo. This morning was the same? He doesn’t seem to have a stomach ache.

I asked the gp to book an X-ray in and he refused due to radiation. I said I understand radiation but it would cause more damage leaving him impacted.... so no idea how I can get a second X-ray...:

Have you felt his tummy? If it's nice and soft then all is good if not they you should be able to feel hard poo still in there. Have my lie down on his bed flat and then just gently feel his belly

Wonderingwhyme · 07/10/2019 17:05

It’s always been soft but looks very very bloated, like a beer belly. It doesn’t feel any different to before. He hasn’t been today.... despite 4 sachets on both Saturday and Sunday. If/when the blockage is clear, if he keeps having the movicol will he end up with diarrhoea?

So he’s on the toilet now and he’s saying they are hard like rabbit poo?? So still constipated.... he’s never had that at all..

Come and join the Movicol Mummies group on Facebook - you will get tonnes of support there for this kind of thing

Wonderingwhyme · 08/10/2019 08:14

Thanks mare I’ll have a look.

He’s having a moan this morning about stomach ache and headache but think he’s ok. Just didn’t want to go to school I think.

When he went last night it was hard lumps which hurt him followed by real fluffy type diarrhoea (sorry!) so he’s clearly not cleared out yet

How's he doing? Make sure watch out or be mindful he doesn't get an anal fissure. It can be caused by hard poo or excess wiping. There will be streaks of blood on the loo role. Sudo cream help protect from it. My 15 yo DS has IBS and that's what we use x

Wonderingwhyme · 10/10/2019 06:44

Thanks for checking on him that’s kind of you. Well he didn’t go yesterday which is the first time since January..... so not good I don’t think. He’s beem at school, Iv only has to collect him once since he started it as he had belly ache. His belly is still very big but I guess it will be for a while. I chased the surgeon yesterday but nothing so I will keep on that. We go swat for Christmas and I really want this all done by the time we go.Sad
