Broken metatarsal pain

My DD12 broke her metatarsal 2 days ago. She has her leg in a cast and she is still in so much pain. Night times are terrible, she cries in pain, can't get comfortable in bed, and is just so miserable. I hate to see her like this. We have been told calpol is the only pain relief we can give her but it's not touching the pain at all. I plan to call the hospital in the morning but in the meantime is there anyone awake who can offer any advice? It's killing me to see my normally happy and active girl in so much pain. Confused

Have you tried ibuprofen? Calpol dose, then 2 hours later ibuprofen.

Thanks Nat6999. At the hospital they said not to give her ibuprofen for some reason. She's woken again in such pain. Morning can't come quick enough.

phone the non emergency help line and see if paracetamol is okay.
is it elevated above her heart?
can you apply ice packs to the outside of the cast where it hurts?
is be concerned about compartment syndrome, what type of cast is it?

fortheloveoflove · 01/10/2019 03:29

Thank you fallfallfall. She has fallen asleep again after another dose of calpol. I just googled compartment syndrome and now I feel even more sick. It's been a very stressful week and I'm honestly ready to dive into a large bucket of gin. Gin

make sure she can wiggle the toes.
make sure the toes are pink and warm and she can feel when you touch them.
she shouldn't be in much pain by now.
id worry the cast is too tight, is it plaster/fiberglass/or a combination using tensors?

Can you go to a walk in centre and get her some more pain relief
I wonder if she could have oramorph
Call 111 and see what they say? Bizzarre about ibuprofen
Poor thing

Just seen this. How is your daughter??

fortheloveoflove · 02/10/2019 10:08

She is actually doing so much better. Last night she only woke once and she wasn't in that much pain, just needed me to help her turn over. The pain is definitely easing now. Thank you everyone for all your replies and advice. Smile

I remember that pain.
I think part for it is nerve pain due to the swelling, part cramps.
elevating helps, cooling it, magnesium supplement.

My daughter stubbed her toe last week and has broken the toe but the bruising has spread down across her foot. Do you mind me asking what your daughters foot is presenting like??
I’m so glad she’s brightening. It’s so sad seeing your child go through this pain but being unable to help.
I hope she recovers soon x

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/10/2019 22:33

Glad she’s doing better.
What’s the reason for not taking ibuprofen? Is she asthmatic?
Alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen can be very effective, the other thing is to check her paracetamol dose is as much as it can be - based on her weight.
When ds2 had a similar injury he had a lot of pain initially too and the GP prescribed cocodamol which was amazing.

apparently (the scientific jury is still out) ibuprofen can slow down the healing of bones. something to do with the first inflammation starting the healing process.
