Newborn and nappy rash

FTM - DD is 19 days old and EBF.

Please can I ask for some help with my baby’s poor bottom.

She’s feeding really well which is great but she always has a dirty nappy. I change her every hour or two and it’s always dirty and always wet.

So it’s not exactly surprising she’s now got nappy rash.

I don’t know if it’s bothering her too much but obviously I want to treat it and prevent it as much as possible.

I’ve been using sudocrem and gone back to cotton wool and water. I try and let her air for a bit with nappy off but she inevitably poos during this time so I have to get a nappy on again.

Can anyone help me with their recommendations for clearing the rash?

Also - how on earth can I prevent it in the future? I’m told her poo frequency should settle around 6 weeks so what can I do for the next 3? I have tried to figure out when she does a poo (ie how long after a feed) but there doesn’t seem to be a pattern and she does seem to poo a little every time she farts.

I can’t shake the mum guilt that I am not changing her enough but I don’t know what else to do. I’ve been suffering from anxiety and have had an early PND diagnosis so please be gentle Blush

Use reusable wipes. They're brilliant. my baby hasn't had any since we switched. I use cheeky wipes but it's a basically just flannels

AztecTurtle · 26/09/2019 14:49

Have you tried a barrier nappy cream instead? I got a free sample of bepathen so took that in my maternity bag and we just continued to use it. Nappy rash hasn’t ever really been a problem for my DD who is now 6 months unless we miss a patch and then she will get it almost instantly. I think a lot of people on here swear by metanium too?
I hope you fix it quickly, I’m sure it looks worse than it feels for your DD so don’t feel guilty!

Thanks @blueskiesbrighteyes I was going to give them a try eventually so maybe I will look into those sooner.

@aztecturtle will the barrier cream treat the existing rash? I was using the sudocrem to try and treat it but if a barrier cream will do the same I will try that.

They are so much better than wipes for poo! As they're a textured surface they get it off it one go. Brilliant. I only switched at about three months and wish I had sooner

GummyGoddess · 26/09/2019 15:04

The yellow metanium, not the every day one. Also reusable wipes and just chuck some towels down and let her be naked as much as possible.

blueskiesbrighteyes · 26/09/2019 15:04

And I found fresh air clears it up better than any creams x

avocuddl · 26/09/2019 15:07

You need yellow metanium to treat the rash then a barrier cream once it's cleared up- I found the child's farm cream to be lovely. Also yes to reusable wipes and as much nappy free time as possible

hittheroadjack1 · 26/09/2019 15:08

You need weleda nappy rash cream or connotrane.

Moonflower12 · 26/09/2019 15:12

Lots of fresh air. Metanium is brilliant. Also which nappies are you using? I couldn't use certain brands of disposables as DD had almost instant nappy rash.

MustardScreams · 26/09/2019 15:16

Definitely change the nappy brand, some brought dd out in the most awful rash.

Breast milk on the rash clears it up quickly. Wipe on with cotton wool, let baby be nappy free on a towel on a mat on the floor as much as possible. Yellow metanium is good.

AztecTurtle · 26/09/2019 15:24

@PhyllisVance I find that it doesn’t clear it but let’s it clear up without being irritated, but my DD doesn’t get more than a few spots so if your DD is bad then follow the advice upthread for using the yellow metanium and then a barrier cream after

PhyllisVance · 26/09/2019 15:30

Thank you all so much for the replies. I feel better already now that I’ve got lots of things to try.

If it's not clearing with Sudacrem and there is a spotty red rash it's almost certainly thrush. If you're not confident ask your hv or GP to take a look before putting 1% clotrimazole on. GP may prescribe something even a bit stronger that contains a combo of things to clear it up depending on severity. Plenty of nappy free time is also very important (most love having this whilst laid on a towel on the floor or changing mat on the floor).
