My dd3 has tooth decay

My dd3 has a tooth at the black that’s turning brown.

I feel awful and such a shitty mum. She brushes every other day because she hates it and I can’t pin her down. She doesn’t drink squash or anything, and rarely has sweets but she loves milk.

I feel sick 😩

I’m going to ring the dentist today and try and get her in.

I don’t know what to do 😔😔😔

What will the dentist do?

I understand OP. Yes, we'd love our children to be fully cooperative.

I too pin down when needed (she brushes herself sometimes) as I feel healthy teeth are non-negotiable. Yesterday it ended up in a stand off after coaxing and playing brushing songs etc but her teeth got brushed because I don't want her to have rotten teeth. End of.

One thing that I didn't expect about being a parent is how often I need to suspend my emotional comfort to deal with a difficulty with my child. Yes. Pinning down is not something I want to do. Neither is wrestling my child into a car seat. Neither is holding them down for immunisations.

But it has to be done for their well being and safety. Put big girl pants on and sort it. She'll thank you later.

Our daughter hated her teeth brushing so we changed tact. She’s a bit younger & I found a toothbrushing song on YouTube that captured her imagination and we only play it at brushing time. She had to sit on Daddies knee and I brush her teeth. I also changed from mint toothpaste to berry flavour & that’s gone down a treat!

Together she now gets excited for teeth brushing.

An older kid, try an app? There are toothbrushes that link up to games on iPads etc to get kids to clean their teeth & win games! I say anything to get them done twice a day! It’s so important. My mum was rigorous with my teeth & I have no fillings as an adult. I thank her for it, I’ve had no bother with my teeth whatsoever bar an infected wisdom tooth extraction which is no-ones fault!

My ds has a rare genetic condition, part of which is lots of oral and dental problems...combined with his sensory issues and difficulty brushing due to macroglossia (large tongue) - tooth brushing has been an absolutely hellish journey.

We spent years wrapping him in a towel as he screamed, have had weekly dental appointments to try and get him used to dental treatment.....however we have brushed his teeth morning and night every day since teeth first appeared. Because it is our job as parents, and gradually over the years he has been much better about us brushing his teeth and at the dentist.

Sadly due to his condition, despite our best efforts, he has had to have extractions and dental treatment under General Anaesthetic....this has been far more awful than any of daily tooth brushing battles. Please, please brush your child's teeth twice daily, however hard it may be.

Well you didnt want to pin her down to brush her teeth so now you can pin her down while she is anaethatised to have them filled/extracted.

Cause and effect. Well done you.

Because I’m not willing to pin my child down to do her teeth

Then you will allow her teeth to rot. You choose - you either brush her teeth, like a responsible parent, or you pander to her. You are choosing to allow her teeth to rot.

This. Also, you do realise if it has to be removed she has to be given a general anaesthetic right? They tape her eyes shut, put oxygen over her mouth, and she is knocked out in order to have the tooth removed. That's all on you.

YouJustDoYou · 30/09/2019 13:15

Watch this. Maybe then you will make her brush her teeth.

I've had to pin my toddler down for a GA (not teeth related) and it's much worse than brushing teeth!

legoninjago1 · 30/09/2019 13:35

Pinned both of mine down for teeth brushing at that age too. Honestly OP just do it. After having it done to them a handful of times, both of mine gave up and teeth brushing became painless quite quickly. You're taking the easier road for yourself by not doing this. Best of luck with the extraction. Hope it's the last.

You must brush her teeth. No wonder she has tooth decay if you only brush every other day.

There's several tricks to try here but at the end of the day you are going to have to pin her down or wrap her up in a towel or something to allow you to brush her teeth.

Read books, watch episodes of TV programmes, etc. Topsy and Tim definitely did an episode on it.
