Any dentists around please, DS, broken adult tooth and root canal

Basically ds broke his front adult tooth 2 years ago in an accident at school.
It was rebuilt by an emergency dentist , who did a fab job.

Its now got a bit of an infection, so hes got antibiotics and they want to do a root canal on it to try to keep it longer, I think, they certainly don't want to pull it anyway.

There is absolutely no way ds will let them do it.
So are waiting on information about a referral for a GA.

Can anyone shed any light on what would happen?
I will need to drip drip drip info etc to DS before hand , equally I don't know myself what would happen etc.

I think your son can probably have the broken tooth 'built up' again. Root canal fillings can cause problems, if there is any residual infection it would be trapped. There have been cases where people have had frequent mouth infections which ceased immediately when the root canal fillings were removed.

If this is the only infection he has had in two years, it's worth going for the simplest option. Persuade him to use a mouth wash (Corsodyl or own brand equivalent), regularly.

If there's infection he needs a root canal.

Don't avoid the root canal, if he has infection around the tooth you can lose the bone surrounding the tooth, if god forbid he does lose the tooth he will need that bone for an implant. He also risks abscesses etc, cysts.

How old is your DS? Is he seen by a community dentist? I know with adults lots of places won't do dental treatment under GA, and with children might be funny about a GA for a root canal. But if there's been trauma and he needs a root canal they might.

If your DS can have the tooth built up, he can have a root canal. From his perspective it's just a long filling, not painful or anything, and only a small amount of 'drilling'

He will have the GA, they basically clean out the root canal system, which is really gentle and fill it with rubber, then put filling on top

Afterwards it can be sensitive, but often only if there was pre Pre-root canal. But he probably won't even know it's been done.

The tooth may discolour after a root canal, in which case be might need whitening in the future, but if you dont have the root canal it will definitely discolour.

Hi
He is 11 now, but has issues, he barely lasted the dental appointment this week, just about tolerated the xrays, were agony to him.

I assumed he was older than 11, does he have SEN?

In which case they should do it under GA, for some reason i assjmed he was a teenager. He really doesn't need to worry at all honestly OP he won't know it's happened and the worst bit will be the GA recovery, it's literally just a filling but in the root as well as the crown.

I had this done as I killed the nerve into my front tooth when I fainted while pregnant.

It is a lengthy and sometimes uncomfortable procedure but now you'd never know I had it done and there has been no loss of feeling or change of appearance in the tooth.

Noise cancelling headphones and a good audio book got me through it. Perhaps you can also bribe him with a reward?

InvisibleToEveryone · 22/09/2019 22:16

Thanks,

Investigation into what SEN he has is ongoing at the mo.

There's medical things I thought he'd freak at but he's done no issue.
Then the teeth xray he was claiming was agony and was trying to slide off the chair....dentist was fab though and patiently talked him round.

Having them rebuilt after the accident was not fun, at one point I had to literally hold him down and he cried all the way through it.

I'd like to avoid that this time around.

My DS snapped his front adult tooth when he was around 8/9. He snapped it right on the nerve and it was agony for him. He kept having it built up with a temporary piece but it never lasted long - sometimes only until the next day. When he was about 11/12 he had a root canal done (with injection, not GA). I didn't think he would go through with it but he did and he has had no more problems since. His front tooth is ever so slightly discoloured but unless it's pointed out, you'd never know. I don't know about GA but the root canal was definitely worth it.

Please listen to @BlueCornsihPixie who is talking sense. I agree with her comments.

@Rachelover60 is talking utter rubbish!
