Chesty cough

Does anyone have any suggestions to help relieve a chesty cough in a 3.5 year old?
No temperature, runny nose and eating and drinking plenty.

Damn cough keeps waking her up and she gets really upset.
Cough medicines are not recommended under the age of 6 so I've just been giving her simple linctus but I feel it's worse than useless!

Vicks vapour on feet and then put socks over top. Or put some on her PJs where she's not going to end up rubbing it. Also a steam shower before bed (so in bathroom and run hot water until whole room is full of steam). Above has helped me before.

The Vicks on feet thing is a myth. People will swear blind that it helps, but it’s just confirmation bias. Vapour rub on feet makes no difference to phlegm in lungs or horrible tickly throats, and why would it? How could it? Smile

Sorry OP, I have no advice. Coughs are so miserable. My son just coughed until he threw up his dinner.

I only thought it went on feet under socks in young kids to prevent them touching it and putting it in their eyes or nose etc. I don't think anyone is saying there's anything magical going on...

I've also put vicks in boiling water and left it by the cot, but with older kids they could get out and burn themselves.

A humidifier with olbas oil in it helps my little ones when they're chesty. A hot shower or wet clothes on a radiator can also do the trick of making the air more humid and relieving congestion. Calpol plugins might help too and they have a lovely, soothing lavender aroma. Hope your dd gets better soon!
