Parathyroid Levels High

Hi there,
Looking for some info, my dc had bloods done a few months back. He was being assessed for autism and he is having bad leg pain in the lower legs mainly always at night, can wake him from sleep. He will start wriggling then the moaning starts and before longs he's hysterical with the pain. Ibuprofen and calpol sometimes doesn't touch this and deep massage of the front of his shin on his bone can sometimes give distraction until the pain meds set in.

Anyway we mentioned this to paediatrician and she observed him walking and felt all round his legs. She said he was walking between going on top toes to completely flat footed and with feel leaning inwards.

She said she thinks he needs an insole and would be referred but also that blood work needed done too to rule out other things.

So here we are three months down the line after an initial letter to say bloods were fine they've contacted me again to say that his parathyroid levels are high and he needs to have his bloods done again and vitamin D levels checked too.

We go on Tuesday.

So having had a snoop round on dr google it seems that there is no information out there for kids and in fact one website said it's extremely unlikely for kids to have this. Which I know could be a load of bull. So was wondering if anyone else had had this with their little one and what was the outcome for example is corrected by a short dose of meds or is this something he will always have?

Thanks

The most likely outcome is that the result on the test is low for no particular reason or because the "normal" ranges are often defined for adults, not children. This is commonly a situation when we test for lots of things (often the case when the symptoms aren't pointing in one clear direction).
Parathyroid is a bone-regulation hormone. It can be high as part of a disease state but in these cases this usually goes along with other blood abnormalities or significant symptoms, including failure to grow.
From what you've stated it sounds unlikely that there is going to be a need for a specific medical intervention. Hopefully your GP will be able to interpret with the results of your further tests, otherwise they can refer to a paediatrician / endocrinologist if there is still uncertainty.

@Iesugrist thank you his levels were higher than the normal range for a child according to his letter, it was his paediatrician who wrote to us to say this and that she had requested follow up bloods to be redone. Thanks for your input, the information on the internet is extremely scarce and all adult led. So hopefully nothing to worry about. Would these results come back quick?
Thanks again
