Newborn with a cold

My lb is 5 weeks and for the past week has had a period every night from around 8pm to 1am of constant crying until the point of wailing and turning red. He has a cold but it's turned more stuffy and I can hear him struggling to exhale in his cot. I'm worried as I don't know what to do to help him and I know it must be hard being stuffed with cold and not being able to sleep because of it. Tomorrow I'm going to buy a humidifier as I heard that can help with the snots on his chest, he only seems to settle lying on my chest in bed and even though I don't mind giving up my sleep for him- I am shattered from these nights. Help, anyone? 😔

I've always found the snuffle babe nasal drops to help with a blocked nose. You can get them from amazon. You could also try a nasal aspirator, I've heard good things about them although I've never managed to get one to work myself.
I hope you're little one feels better soon 😊

My little one has got the snuffles too, it's so horrible.

I went to the pharmacy and they recommend saline nose spray which seems to be really helping. Also there are nose bulbs which you can use to pull the snot out. Both options cheap and very effective if done together.

Good luck and hope your little one feels better soon

@Wintermaybe @LovingLivingLife thank you both for your helpful replies!
I haven't heard of the drops / spray before so that will be something I'll be getting tomorrow 😊
I have nasal aspirator (which I also call the boogey sucker) but it's broken 🙄

Hopefully he will have a better night tomorrow, like I said it sounds very 'bunged up' and I can imagine it will be so hard trying to sleep which breathing alone is a struggle

Currently up with an 8 week old with the same thing. I have found the saline drops easier to administer and a bit gentler (the spray gives her a fright) but not sure there’s much else you can do apart from wait it out....

Crying in the evening is very common and a phase that will pass with time, feeling snuffly will not help, if you are breastfeeding your milk squirted up the nose can really help Grin
