Hi there, my 4 year old started limping suddenly last night and complaining it was sore. Still continued to run and jump around, gave them some calpol and bed. Woke up this morning and still limping and reluctant to put any weight on it. There is no temp or swelling. Possible get him to rest it and quiet day at school. I think either doctors or hospital. Any one have any experience or advice Sad

Ah now we had this when our son was 4 too. We thought he was joking for ages (!) until we saw him go to the loo in the night and realised it was real. Took him to a and e - turned out he had a relatively common condition of fluid on the hip. Think it went away on its own. Will google. It wasn’t serious.

Has he had a cold? The fluid around the hip can get inflamed as a result. Try nurofen or similar.

Sorry - forgotten how to link. I think that was what his diagnosis was. So get it checked out by the doctor obv but it could be that.

whitesockss · 18/09/2019 07:53

Take to the docs.

Any nosebleeds or rashes? Is he pale? Has he had any infections recently?

Lou0390 · 18/09/2019 08:59

Thank you all. He hasn't been ill, and has been in good health, no nose bleeds and looks a good colour. I have taken him into school now as he the limp eased a bit. The doctors have asked me to call back at the end of the school day and if he is still limping to bring him in.
I did suggest A&E but the docs felt they wouldn't be able to do much.

He does have a history of hyper mobility in the ankles but I'm wondering what with all the extra running around at school if it has aggravated his knee?

So hard to know what to do for the best Sad

We were told it was caused by a virus but ds hadn’t shown any signs of a cold. At a and e they were at least able to scan his hip and give a diagnosis, so it was useful.

Lou0390 · 18/09/2019 10:07

@Bilingualspingual thanks. I'm thinking I'm going to take him into A&E just to be sure and hopefully they will X-ray etc. I will update when I know more. For the time being I will have an anxious time at work Confused

Good luck and try not to worry.

I would bring him back to the gp at the end of the day, my dd1 (now 18) started limping when she was 2. I brought her to gp and he said we'll monitor, but then I had a new born and my DMil brought her out for the day did all sorts, the next day she couldn't get out of bed and her knee was swollen. I brought her straight to A & E, they x-rayed her did bloods etc and couldn't find anything so referred her to paediatrics who referred her to rheumatology, anyway long story short she was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. When I went to the gp he said that would have been his next step anyway so I probably could have cut out the whole day sitting in A&E with a toddler and a newborn.
My advice though is dont let it g, I let loads of people tell me she wasn't limping or she was maybe doing it for attention because I was pg Hmm all the same people were so shocked as they didn't realise children could have arthritis.

Lou0390 · 18/09/2019 17:20

Just got back from the doctor and the knee looks fine and hardly if any limp now at all. They did say if it comes back with no reason in the next week or so to come back for further tests/x ray.
Thank you to all that replied, really appreciated it. I will keep an eye on it though.

With hypermobility it s par for the course....aches and pains and on off limp

Does he see physio?

Lou0390 · 19/09/2019 08:54

@Embracelife he used to see physio but was signed off when he was three. He also has flat feet but again the physio was not too concerned.
I suppose it's a fine line with hypermobility sufferers to keep active to strengthen their joints but also not over do it. Even harder to explain it to a four year old Confused
