Removing teeth under GA.

My dd ( 5) has been complaining off toothache, where the dentist has come to the solution that her tooth needs to be taken out.
Unfortunately the dentist hospital want to take out 12 teeth while she is under general anaesthetic!!
Feel so guilty, as she went through a phase off not brushing, eating too much sugar..
but I can't have all her teeth taken out! And the hospital are arguing they do all or none..
I'm also a bit annoyed at my dentist for not pointing it out at every check up attended with rest off dc !
Have I got a leg to stand on, or do I need to keep persuading dd to get the injection ( at a new dentist)
Thanks

How big are the fillings needed ?

Can’t they put caps on?

My daughter has some small holes and they have put caps on and some 1 small filling with no injection.

They work on the moto that they have to save as many as possible.

Assuming they are milk teeth then if that's what the professionals are advising I'd listen to them. They are saying they need to come out for a reason. If you dont then she may end up with pain or abscesses. And it's not good for her gum health either to keep in teeth that should come out. I think at five years old, you should never of let there be a phase of not brushing/too much sugar.

ranibowsprimkle · 17/09/2019 20:41

If they need taken out, they need taken out. They're not doing it just for the fun of it.

Just be grateful that it's baby teeth and it won't be long until her adult teeth start coming in.

helpmeouttahere · 18/09/2019 00:28

@Yoyoyo912 they have put caps on it, but still giving her pain. She's had courses of antibiotics which aren't helping .

@Scbchl @ranibowsprimkle ; I know I'm
To blame, and I do feel guilty.. but I don't know when are adult teeth will be comin.. don't want her teased or bullied for having no teeth .. never mind what it will do to her confidence !

I wanted to know if I could argue the
Point off just taking out infected ones alone ?

If the teeth have even the slightest sign of decay its policy to remove them, its to prevent need for further general anaesthesic

Wildorchidz · 18/09/2019 00:31

Are 12 infected? Or so badly decayed that they need to be extracted?

avamiah · 18/09/2019 00:34

How can a 5 year old need 12 teeth removing ??
And not brush her teeth ??
My mother is 82 and cleans her dentures( false teeth ) every night .
12 teeth sounds ridiculous ??

user764329056 · 18/09/2019 00:38

12 teeth at age 5?? That’s a shocking statistic, poor little girl

Purpleartichoke · 18/09/2019 00:38

When dd was nearly 2, she had 4 teeth dissolve almost completely in the course of a few months. The same thing had happened to my sister as a baby, but I still felt so guilty. The dentist was able to do root canals and caps, but it had to be done under GA.

I’m surprised at the rec for 12 teeth. What is the plan to maintain spacing? Will she need speech therapy? I would be asking many, many questions and if at all possible, get another dentist to review her case.

BlueCornsihPixie · 18/09/2019 11:45

If she needs one out under GA, she needs all 12. You have to have any teeth that pose a potential pain/sepsis risk in the future extracted to prevent further GAs. And at 5 if she needs further extractions it will be another general. They won't take out healthy teeth, they will be teeth with decay. That means she has 12 decayed teeth at 5

At 5 it's not a case of persuading her to have the injection, she can either cope with extractions awake or she can't and I haven't met many five year olds who could have multiple extractions under local.

The dental hospital will be specialist paeds dentists, another dentist will say the same thing. Any teeth with decay need to come out.

If she has had caps, then you knew she had decayed teeth, so what was the dentist supposed to point out? If there was a phase when you didn't brush her teeth, and fed her loads of sugar then having all her teeth out is inevitable. What did you expect?

Flossie44 · 18/09/2019 22:08

I really think you need to ask your dentist why it hasn’t been pointed out along the way at routine appointments. I’m guessing she sees a dentist every 6 months?? Surely decay to this extent wouldn’t happen so quickly??
I ask also, because, to a lesser degree my daughter is going through the same. Yet I’m confident she eats extremely healthily, uses specialist toothpaste also. Yet she has an issue with her enamel. She basically hasn’t got any!!
I’m sorry your daughter is going through this, and you for having to face it. A lot of posters have been quite cruel.

helpmeouttahere · 19/09/2019 08:56

@Flossie44 thanks!
I was feeling guilty enough! Older dd have perfect teeth, so I don't know where I went wrong with dd (5) Shock
The decay is at her gum line.. so ultimately when I was forcing her to brush I must've been missing that part..
Dentist just shrugging his shoulders, and didn't even acknowledge her pain.. had to go through dental hospital to get him to write a prescription for antibiotics.
My issue is, I only want those with caps (2) removed .. nothing else .
And she won't even let the needle near her . We are doing hot water bottles/ calpol most nights

OP
The Dental Hospital are acting in your child's best interests, please listen to them. Your child obviously has 12 teeth of poor prognosis. There is no way that they are just going to extract under GA just the 2 teeth that you would want extracting. 3 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months Christmas Day even, your child will wake up with a swollen face or terrible toothache from one of the other 10 teeth. Sometimes the swelling spreads and this results in an acute hospital admission IV antibiotics and an emergency operation.
If you won't consent to the 12 extractions, they will arrange another opinion for your child, which will only delay the inevitable. In the interim, your child will continue to have sleepless nights.
In extremis, it is possible to get a court order to be able to act in the child's best interests when the parents will not consent. That is highly unusual because parents generally do take on board the clinical facts even when it is unpalatable.

@helpmeouttahere how are you now? Does your child have a date for the op? Sending support to you. I'm going through a similar situation. Just think their adult set of teeth will be beautiful! Flowers
