What are the schools thought on her using a iPad or laptop while in a cast?

Showering will be difficult. Depending on cast size and length you can get proper covers to avoid the water getting near her cast.

Knitting needle to scratch the itchy skin deep under the plaster

0lga · 13/09/2019 00:55

My 12 year old would be more concerned about showering, washing her hair and playing the X box

0lga · 13/09/2019 00:56

And don’t do the knitting needle thing - very easy to break the skin.

Wouldn't recommend putting anything sharpe down the cast! Risks of losing it, cutting / infection. As a last option maybe a ruler or something soft. May hurt the injury to tho

A LimbO was brilliant for me when I broke my wrist - limboproducts.co.uk/

Other brands of cast covers are available Grin

Hopefully the school should be able to help her keep up with lessons. Can you speak to them with regards to making allowances/notes/having someone help her? Does the school allow laptops/tablets or would it consider making an exception for her?

Schoolwork can be tricky. My DC brought back friends books at the weekend, and we photocopied them. He dictated homework to me. I had to do my best handwriting! How long is it in a cast for?

Flamingo84 · 13/09/2019 22:03

I had a broken arm aged 13, she has my sympathies!

Things to consider:
Waterproof cover for showers/wash
If she’s in a sling, consider getting one that’s padded at the back of the neck. My NHS fabric one dug in terribly.
Extra pillows to tuck around the arm in bed to sleep.
Practice getting uniform trousers undone before school. She may struggle with buttons so better to find out before needing the loo!Try the looped hair bobble trick to do them up if possible.
For classes will they let her record lessons (maybe not if my classes were anything to go by!) or photocopy a reliable students notes.
I would say that it’s hard and slow to type one handed so notes/homework will take a lot longer.

Be wary of the extra strain of doing everything all day with her good arm as this could cause issues. I injured the shoulder on my dominant arm and couldn’t use it so I was using the other hand to type in work. It just gave me tendinitis in my good hand.

Hope she’s feeling better soon.

No knitting needle or anything else under the cast. Distraction for itching.

BrieAndChilli · 13/09/2019 22:05

Download otter app onto her phone - it’s quite good at transcribing speech etc especially if you do the voice learner bit so it recognises her voice

UrsulaPandress · 13/09/2019 22:07

Definitely a Limbo. They are brilliant.

FixTheBone · 13/09/2019 22:08

Don't put anything down the cast.
Get a cast cover

Don't worry too much about the schoolwork.

DOI - orthopaedic surgeon. And I broke my arms 3 times as a child. Barely remember the cast being a hinderence apart from the time I broke both at the same time......

Hecateh · 13/09/2019 22:11

big infection risk from knitting needles being pushed down and causing injury.

Preferably nothing but a flexible ruler is definitely less bad

noenergy · 13/09/2019 22:14

Piriton does wonders for the itching.

You can get waterproof covers to cover the cast for having a shower.

I would ask school about doing work on an iPad.

Thethingswedoforlove · 14/09/2019 04:17

Wow. This is so fantastic. Thank you! I didn’t know re cast covers. The school does lend an iPad it turns out and permits copying of notes. 4-6 weeks we have been told for the cast. The sling is already digging in so will look to get her a more padded one. You mners are amazing! Thank you
