Persistent cough in healthy 12 year old

DS has a persistent cough in that it has been going on for at least 2 months. It isnt consistent and tends to be while he is talking although it is definitely a cough not a throat clearing noise. He is perfectly healthy in every other way, plays a lot of sport and doesnt get breathless etc. Does this require a Drs appointment? I know they say if you have a cough over 3 weeks go to the Drs but it just doesnt seem serious enough for that. His voice has started breaking but not being a man I have no idea if this might lead to the feeling of needing to cough. Any ideas?

I’d get it checked out just to make sure. My DD was 8 and had a low-key cough for ages. Quite dry and barely. Was asthma. She’s 18 now and not used an inhaler for at least 5 years.

She was never breathless either. Dr thought it followed a chest infection a year or two before.

Barky not barely

asthma or gastric reflux. it can take a long time for little cilia hairs in the lungs to settle down after a chest infection. no matter what it's worth looking into with a non urgent dr.'s apt.

Similar to Red, when DS was 1 he had a persistent cough. Went to the doctors 5 times over an 8 week period. Doctors could hear anything, but in the end we asked that DS was referred. They did an x-ray and DS had an infection that needed antibiotics. DS is now asthmatic. Had to fight to get that diagnosed as well.
I would get your DS checked out and be prepares to go back if DS doesn't improve.
Best wishes.
