Baby wheezing

I have a 10 week old baby girl and she wheezes at night! It doesn't seem alarming as she's totally fine during the day. Is it normal in newborns?

Its hard to know what you mean by wheezing. Actual wheezing is a dry sound and definitely not normal but if it's a lone issue and she's otherwise well it's unlikely. Definitely see your GP you can't be too careful with babies. If it's a wasted visit the GP won't mind and will reassure you. Does she have any symptoms associated with acid reflux?na croakier sound can be caused by that as they don't cough at will yet. Is it at only at night or when lying down for any longish period? Do you live in a high pollen area?

Hi there, yes she does have reflux. Her wheezing sounds like little snores if you get what i mean. I'll definitely book her an appointment, thank you Smile

Off to bed with a sandwich now (living the dream) so just wanted to add since I won't be around to reply later, if you just Google newborn noises /sleeping noises/breathing sounds you'll get plenty of examples of normal sounds which may reassure you. It's most likely completely normal sounds (newborns make the weirdest noises Grin). Hope all is well when you do get a definitive answer. Congrats on your baby girl

Hello! My baby does this, and sometimes when he’s feeding he’ll be really noisy too!

The ENT doc thinks it’s laryn-something. I forget the name haha. But basically some babies are born with a more floppy/soft larynx which causes the noisy breathing etc. The consultant didn’t seem to think it was a problem and said it should go away as the baby grows and the larynx firms up.
Obviously it could be something completely different, but hopefully that helps!

Ah ok. It's almost certainly the reflux causing her to adapt her breathing and try and clear her airways. It's completely normal and a good sign that she's learning to deal with the reflux lying down rather than those awful struggling to inhale episodes they have the first few weeks. Both my girls were lucky enough to have the full GERD alongside colic (6 year old was fine after weaning I think and 7 week old is still battling on with it) It's sad how they just accept it but it's why they are so hardy - babies are tough do long as they're properly cared for. it's just scary some of the noises they make! Don't worry. See the doctor anyway as it will out your mind at rest in a way a random mumsnetter can't but I'm sure she's fine. Raising the head end of the Moses/cot by 30 degrees can help a lot too if you haven't tried that. The acid doesn't make its way to the oesophagus so easily.
Right I'm off to get crumbs in the bed.
Sorry for the cross-post!
