Diarrhoea advice!

Not a poo troll!!

DS (3 years) has had diarrhoea for 5 days. No temperature and very little complaining. We've been keeping him hydrated and fed with bland food. We been cleaning and sterilising and bleaching.

Does anyone have any amazing cures or remedies or ways to make him feel a bit better?

Try to avoid dairy, and let him have ice lollies they will help to keep him hydrated.
Avoid anything with artificial sweeteners as they can act as a laxative.

Heratnumber7 · 01/09/2019 09:28

Avoid all food for at least 24 hours is the usual advice.

NannaNoodleman · 01/09/2019 09:52

He can't go without food for 24 hours! Where on Earth is that advice from?

Probiotics are a must. With all that diarrhoea the good bacteria gets flushed out and the runs persist. Good luck!

Heratnumber7 · 01/09/2019 15:49

Standard advice for D&V. Of course he can go without food for 24 hours.

TheSheepofWallSt · 01/09/2019 15:51

@Heratnumber7

That’s massively outdated advice.
Please don’t give out medical advice on an Internet forum unless you’re a medical professional, or at least, not an enormous idiot.

Heratnumber7 · 01/09/2019 15:54

It may be out dated, but it works.

Who in their right mind would take anonymous medical advice from an Internet chat forum anyway?

Who's to say I'm not medically qualified?

dementedpixie · 01/09/2019 15:58

NHS does not say to starve for 24 hours, it is not standard advice. Keep up fluids and give bland non spicey foods. Carb rich foods are good

You, by saying that

mumtooneyr · 01/09/2019 16:01

But it works, I hope you don't have kids and do this to them Confused

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 01/09/2019 16:02

As a Crohn's disease sufferer I would advise squash with real sugar if you can find it or cordial as the sugar helps water absorption. Bland food are perfect especially carbs so chicken nuggets and chips is a great meal!

My consultant said never stop eating as your stomach needs food to work on to address the amount of acids and fight the infection. No food means the infection or bacteria is allowed to fester. This could be wrong but it has always worked for me and was the advice of my consultant at St Marks the specialist bowel hospital.

NannaNoodleman · 01/09/2019 20:20

I started him on probiotics (we have a cupboard full due to DD's CMPA) and he's been quaffing squash and ice lollies.

He's still suffering with it but is generally well in himself. Great timing to start back to preschool Hmm

I might suggest that he fasts for 24 hours and see how he reacts to that Grin

Re the starve it out advice - my DD had a sick bug at 12m and doctor and nhs111 said keep offering food and it just didn’t go, she kept being sick (although nibbled food in between) until she was admitted with dehydration where they advised starving for 24 hours and gave a leaflet about this. So it is sometimes advised, but better from a medical professional.

Problem is, with diarrhoea, your upper digestive system can often feel ok and you do feel hungry. Probiotics? Is there a palatable version of activated charcoal? I take the tablets when unwell and it sorts me out.

Maybe the doc should take a sample in case it needs antibiotics as it’s lasted so long.

NannaNoodleman · 02/09/2019 12:16

Saw the GP who said just to carry on. It's not unusual for child diarrhoea to last weeks! Confused

You may find that school won't have him back till he's been 48hrs without diarrhoea.
And no, don't starve him, but give very bland food. Rice, dry toast etc.

NannaNoodleman · 02/09/2019 17:25

I know!! Perfect timing to start preschool and going back to nursery Hmm

It's not going to look good, asking for this week off after a 2 month summer holiday!!
