10yd old DS has chipped tooth

I wonder if anyone can offer any positive experiences please. My 10yr old DS fell at the swimming pool on Thursday last week and has chipped his front top left tooth, about 1/3-1/2 of it. We saw our dentist on friday (we saw the emergency dentist on thurs but there was nothing they could do) and he has reattached the tooth but my anxiety has been spilling over and I think its getting DS down. I know the fix is temporary and I guess I just wonder if anyone has been through similar and can give me anything positive to cling to? I have 4 veneers myself as I had horrible teeth and I hoped so badly that my children wouldnt have to go through the same. My hearts breaking for him and try as I might I just cant seem to put it into perspective.

Hi, my DS broke both his permanent front teeth in a fall at Primary school. He has them built up with filling and they look great.
He is now 23, they have been replaced a few times, when they start to look off or once when he bit something hard, but the dentist just puts them back no problem.
He was advised not to consider veneers until well into adulthood as they have to take more of the tooth away to fit them, and they are expensive if broken. Also, he still has a permanent retainer fitted so no point having anything done whilst that is there.
People comment on how nice his teeth are, so don’t worry.

I broke off half my front tooth in primary school, the dentist put this white gel type stuff on it and shined a uv light to make it hard and it looks like a normal front tooth now, I assume that's what the dentist would do for your son. It came out once on a sweet and I just had it done again so I've only had it replaced once in about 13 years

I broke my adult top front tooth about age 7-8. The inner corner; about a third. I had to have it redone when I was pregnant so about 30 years later? It’s not been any major problem.

Thank you so much for the replies. The guilt is unreal but you've given me hope that its not going to be something that causes him constant worry. Thank you x.

My 14 yo DD has the bottom third of one of her top front middle teeth missing from a fall when she was 9 ish. It honestly isn't the end of the world and it doesn't bother her. The dentist checks each time that it is still alive. Once her general orthodontic treatment is finished the dentist says she can build it up to align.

Hi OP. I used to be a dentist and also broke a front tooth as a young teen. DS just needs to be a bit careful as a repair is never as strong, things like buying sellotape, crusty bread or (oddly) playing some brass instruments may cause the repair to fail.

Keep an eye out for the tooth discolouring as that's a sign that the nerve is dying. I ended up with a root canal treatment and a crown but it took a long while for the nerve to die. 2-3 years IIRC.

things like buying sellotape, ... may cause the repair to fail

Do you mean biting Sellotape? If not then why is buying Sellotape such a dangerous activity? Grin

Bloody autococonut. Yes. Biting.

TeenPlusTwenties · 15/09/2019 21:55

Is an autococonut a coconut on wheels? GrinGrin

My DD broke hers when she opened the car door in her face. She kept pinging the filling off - two nights running at one point 🙄 - so we have left it for now. Just looks like it is growing in.

My DS did his adult front tooth diving in where he shouldn't have on holiday. He was 11 and I was so worried for him.
The fix was done as soon as we could get to the dentist and it was sorted then and there. So far its indistinguishable from the other perfect tooth.
