Hi
My son has been up all night with stomach pain (generalised although slightly more painful on the right). Gave him paracetamol at 6am which he vomited up about 10 mins later. His vomit was very dark brown (never seen anything like it!) although he has had a nosebleed during the night if that is relevant. Have Dr appointment at 10 am. He’s finally fallen asleep. Given that he is exhibiting (I think) signs of appendicitis, is it ok to let him sleep now and take him at 10am?

Hope he's ok, I'd have gone to A&E to be honest. Sounds like he vomited blood.

HatsOnForTheQueen · 25/08/2019 11:38

Thanks. We are at the hospital now, they are querying appendicitis so are going to do blood tests. They think it probably isn’t that but time will tell!

I hope he gets some relief from whatever it is, poor thing.

How did your son get on ?

HatsOnForTheQueen · 25/08/2019 19:31

He has an appendicitis, they are operating in the morningSad. He’s in a bit of pain but on a drip and antibiotics. I’ll be glad when the op is done. Thanks for asking Smile

Good call for getting him there. All the best for tomorrow.

bobstersmum · 25/08/2019 20:10

Wow! Best of luck for the op.

BabyST · 25/08/2019 22:12

Make sure you get plenty of pain relief in for tomorrow night. He will most likely be discharged post op. He is will very sore simple tasks like having a wee or sitting up is extremely painful.

Hope all goes well x

HatsOnForTheQueen · 25/08/2019 22:30

Will do. Good advice! I was a bit surprised when they said if all went well they would let him come home after 6 hours!

Oh poor him. I guess if it’s key hole it’s not too bad an op.

BabyST · 25/08/2019 22:43

Yeah they pretty much kick you out straight away. Just another tip make sure you keep an eye for post surgery infection. If he spins a fever 39 or more then you'll need to take him to A&E for a post op infection.

Best of luck tomorrow with everything x

How is your DS Hats on?
Just seen this and wish I had yesterday, my 9yr old DD had hers removed 3 weeks ago and the surgeon said post op she could go that evening but the nurse advised after not to rush it and stay overnight as it will be difficult moving about the first day or so.
We did stay as even though DD was out of surgery by 10.30am she was still quite groggy and feeling sick from the anesthetic that evening and really struggled to move without a lot of pain.

It took a few days to get moving properly again but she then bounced back really quickly.

As someone else said do look out for infection and not necessarily within the first few days, DD ended up with the lower incision infected 2 weeks after, think because it was on the knicker line and with the heat it was getting aggrevated.

Hope your DS recovers quickly.

He’s not doing to badly thanks! A bit sore but he’s managed to do a few short walks in the corridor. Having lots of antibiotics. His appendix had started to perforate so there was a bit of pus in his tum so they are keeping a close eye on him but he seems fine. What a relief!

I’m really glad to hear your dd has bounced back so well Smile

Oh and they have said they will want him to stay 24-48 hrs post surgery because of needing IV antibiotics. They will review him tomorrow afternoon with a possibility of going home if all is well.
Have totally outed myself but will be changing name again soon Grin

That's good in a way that they are keeping him. Plenty of IV antibiotics and hopefully some IV pain relief. It will be worse in the morning if they just give him oral pain relief

Haggisfish · 26/08/2019 22:17

I’m glad he’s ok and so good you went in.

howyoulikemenow · 28/08/2019 16:34

Glad he's ok :) not nice at all!

BabyST · 29/08/2019 11:37

Hope your son is doing better now x

HatsOnForTheQueen · 29/08/2019 17:34

Thanks BabyST he is home now. Doing well but then occasionally starts to look very tired and is needing to nap (at least twice a day at the moment). All wounds are looking fine and I’m on high alert for any signs of infection (temp etc!) but he seems to be doing fine. PHEW!

Great to hear that he's home and the hospital didn't discharge too soon.
Hope he's not too uncomfortable now he's moving about more and the tiredness will disappear in a few days

BabyST · 30/08/2019 03:52

Very good news! It's going to wear him out for a few weeks after it x glad he's doing well

I just caught myself before posting and read the whole thread. Was just about to say A&E now, it's his appendix!

I was up all night with stomach pain earlier this year...sobbed and vomited all night and then caved and rang 111 at about 6am. By the time I saw a doctor mine had ruptured. DH thought I was being melodramatic. Don't think he'll make that mistake again. Was in hospital for 5 days on IV antibiotics Sad

Hope he's on the mend-he'll be in good hands!
