Treatment for cradle cap in 3 yo? Any ideas?

My 3.5 yo daughter still has cradle cap - and it's now refusing to shift. It's quite thick and brownish in patches (sorry) and is definitely stopping her very fine hair from coming through in places.

I've been using a special shampoo but it's for babies so perhaps not effective? Neither does olive oil work.

I now pick little bits of it off, (I know you're not supposed to) but I think this could be making the thin patches worse.
Any tips ?

Have you seen a gp?

Baguetteaboutit · 21/08/2019 19:36

Head and Shoulders. I know it's not really the most gentle, kid centric thing on the market but it worked a treat for my toddler with stubborn cradle cap. But if I meet you in real life and I'll deny it and say it was olive oil with a touch of lavender Wink

chickenyhead · 21/08/2019 19:39

Olive oil only works if you let it soak in and then baggage the area. A 3 y/o wont have that lol.

Motionoftheoceon · 21/08/2019 19:40

I can second head and shoulders, treated our 2 year old with it for a week for the same problem. Then about 7 days later noticed it was all becoming loose and gently took it all off with a nitty gritty comb.

Baby oil massaged into scalp and left for a while will soften it up and can then be brushed out. My HV recommended coconut oil.

harper30 · 21/08/2019 19:41

My DD has it until she was about 6 months and I'd had enough of it then (aka my ability to resist picking it had reached its limits)
I soaked her head in oil, I think it was coconut oil, which didn't smell very good after 20 mins but never mind, then used this brush once it was all soft from the oil

I probably repeated that twice and it was all gone 👍

I’ll second Head & Shoulders. My 2, 4 & 6yo still have it but H&S keeps it at bay for the most part (I only use it on them twice a week now). My older 2 grew out of it around 6/7. Apparently DH had it until he was around 10, mil tried all manner of things (including how long between washes, just water etc) then one day it just went.

Olive oil and a nit comb. I had great fun getting it all off with a nit comb.

LittleAndOften · 21/08/2019 19:44

Another vote for coconut oil; massage through then comb out the dead skin. I did this with ds and it never returned. It's also good for dandruff!

musicinspring1 · 21/08/2019 19:46

Nothing shifted DS ‘s cradle cap and I remember despairing , and then it just sort of went Confused He was about 6 I think - he’s 8 now and definitely has none at all. Sorry that’s no help at all but maybe reassuring that it may disappear of its own accord one day???

elliejjtiny · 21/08/2019 19:46

Head and shoulders shampoo and nitty gritty comb.

Welcometoparadise · 21/08/2019 19:47

We used a cradle cap brush (pourty) one - a little bit of oil and then the brush to loosen the cradle cap- followed by normal baby shampoo. Once a week or fortnight with head and shoulders for good measure as well :) Both my girls were prone to cradle cap into late toddlerhood.

SleepyRoo · 21/08/2019 21:46

Aha thanks for all these brilliant suggestions- I hadn't thought of head & shoulders. Worth a try.

I've used the nit comb before, but the CC flakes themselves are glued quite firmly onto her head. I need to get them loose before the comb can help.

Coconut oil - I did try this a while back but may revisit.

Her hair is so blonde and fine, the CC really shows through.

Olive oil on the head applied liberally and left overnight. Put a towel on her pillow. Then nit comb in the morning. Shampoo and repeat until its all gone.

You are right about needing to loosen the flakes.

bookmum08 · 21/08/2019 21:57

My girl had what I thought was cradle cap but it kept getting more and more solid and she ended up getting a monk style bald patch on the top of her head. The GP gave us a fungal cream which softened it and then we did the baby oil over night thing. So checking with the GP may be a good idea.
(brushing those giant flakes off was soooo weirdly fun)

clucky3 · 21/08/2019 22:10

My DS had this until I took him to the GP about it at age 6. They prescribed a coal tar shampoo which had absolutely no effect. Everything I tried with various oils and combing was only ever temporary, as soon as I stopped the cradle cap was back within days. The only thing that worked was head and shoulders. I still use it on him once a week

Twixes · 21/08/2019 22:22

A tiny bit of Nizoral, keep it out of their eyes as it stings. Leave on for 4 min and you'll never see another bit of gunky stuff, ever!

millespadpuddy · 21/08/2019 22:33

Olive oil,a face cloth & not comb.
