19 month old not walking anymore

MissImperfect93 · 16/08/2019 09:56

My 19month old boy went to bed as normal. Woke up and was refusing to walk and screaming. Appears to be not putting weight on his left leg. Gave him some calpol and Took him to the gp and he said it could be possible cramp and knocked his confidence as he took a few steps there. Now we are back home he is struggling/refusing to walk. Any walking his does he is crying and not putting full weight on his leg. He is either standing holding onto something or sliding along the floor to get around or wanting to pick up.
Has anyone else experienced this where there little ones ?
I'm not sure what to do.

Haven't experienced this but could he have got his foot caught in the bed and twisted his foot/ankle - assuming he has a cotbed with bars.

MissImperfect93 · 16/08/2019 10:07

He only has bar against the wall. But he enjoys not having his bed as a cot.
He allowed me to move his ankle and didn't move. He started crying when we lifted his leg.

Oh poor you and him :( it sounds like genuine pain. Did the doctor suggest what to do if it continues? Otherwise maybe a&e for some xrays / a proper look?

Polly99 · 16/08/2019 10:17

My DD suddenly stopped putting weight on one leg when she was 1, and she had an infection in her ankle which needed hospital treatment.
Has your son been unwell recently (eg fever, cold or flu)?

whitesiderd · 16/08/2019 10:18

I would take to A&E, I had a friend who's toddler did this and he had a small fracture that was very painful and needed a cast

TheRLodger · 16/08/2019 10:18

Did he sleep in an awkward way. And now has a cramp? Presuming you’ve ruled out an injury which happened yesterday. Like a bad bruise or something

MissImperfect93 · 16/08/2019 10:19

Gp reckons he doesn't need an xray as when gp looked at him and moved his leg he didn't move. This was around 40 minutes after calpol. It has now being 2 hours since he had calpol and is just standing around. Trying to play but getting frustrated.

Has he got a temperature? They can get infections in their joints.

Embracelife · 16/08/2019 10:19

Dislocation or subluxation take to a and e or minor Injuries

MissImperfect93 · 16/08/2019 10:21

He appears to be coming down with a cold. Has no temperature. I checked with the nursery yesterday in case he fell but he didn't. He went up the stairs as normal last night for bed. Everything started this morning.

A&e today OP.

MrsKCastle · 16/08/2019 10:22

My DD had similar as a toddler and it turned out to be quite a serious infection in her knee joint, called septic arthritis. Has your DS had any cough/cold or other infection recently? With DD she had a sore throat and high temperature and then a couple of days later she was refusing to bear weight on one leg. The other signs were that her knee was red, hot to touch and swollen. DD's infection was treatable and she is absolutely fine now. But I would say don't hesitate to go back to the GP or go to A&E if he doesn't improve.

SnugStars · 16/08/2019 10:25

I would take him straight to A&E, I’m really surprised the GP didn’t arrange to send you to the children’s ward to get it checked.

Polly99 · 16/08/2019 10:36

A&E. Children this age do not always have a fever when they get an infection. A&E can rule out infections, breaks etc (and the GP can’t).

MissImperfect93 · 16/08/2019 11:03

I rung 111. They advised to get him seen by a doctor within 2 hours. Came back to doctors and there isn't even a doctor here to see him. Next step is an urgent care centre and sit and wait

MrsKCastle · 16/08/2019 11:07

Good luck. I know it's a pain having to sit and wait, but it's important to rule out the more serious stuff.

Booboostwo · 16/08/2019 11:19

I would also worry about an infection of the joint or a broken bone. My DD fell over on her bottom when walking at 14mo (sat down more like rather than a fall) and the doctors all said she could not have possibly broken her bone like that so it took 10 days to xray...hairline fracture of the tibia.

itchyandscratchy1 · 16/08/2019 16:28

Any update OP?

MrsKCastle · 17/08/2019 10:24

Hope you were seen relatively quickly MissImperfect. How is he this morning?

Itsonlytuesdayqwer · 17/08/2019 10:26

How is he Op?

LadyFlumpalot · 17/08/2019 10:33

My DD did this at about the same age. Woke up and was unable to bear weight on one leg. The doctor sent us to the children's ward at the hospital where they took bloods, checked for sepsis, did an X-ray and had a whole gaggle of people come look at her.

Turned out she had something called "irritable hip" which was an inflammation of her hip joint caused by a cold she was just getting over. They kept us in over night to rule out sepsis and sent us home with an open pass valid for a month and instructions to monitor her temperature carefully.

BUT. It could have been something horrible. Please go to A&E with this.

MrsMozartMkII · 17/08/2019 10:40

I hope all is okay.

confusedandemployed · 17/08/2019 10:44

Exactly the same thing happened to my DD as that of @LadyFlumpalot. Irritable hip is a post-viral condition - usually only lasts a short time. Poor DD had it for 2 months, seems she just had virus after virus after virus. We had x-rays, CT scans, blood tests the lot with nothing showing. There was a time when she saw an HCP every single day for about a fortnight.
Then suddenly it just vanished overnight.
But you do need to rule out the nasties, so I would agree to keep pushing for further investigation.

Smurf123 · 17/08/2019 10:48

My brother did this when he was much younger.. We were on holiday in USA and due to fly home that day.. He was a bit older than your ds but not by a lot - small enough we still had the buggy for night time when he was tired. We took him swimming that morning to see did it help and he was fine in the water and played about as happy as could be but then tried to climb out the steps and cried as soon as he put weight on his leg... My mum is a nurse and parents decided it was worth getting him home as planned rather than missing our flight to sit in a and e in USA as we knew he hadn't fallen overnight and he was otherwise happy in himself when not on his feet..in the end by the time we got home he is as using it normally again although took him to gp anyway and they said maybe it was cramp or growing pains... Not sure what it was but he was back to normal within 48 hours.. Hope ds is ok op..

Witchend · 17/08/2019 11:26

There's a virus, apparently particularly common in boys between age 5 and 10yo, that causes the leg to temporarily become non-weightbearing.

It must be fairly common, as whenever I've been in A&E first thing in the morning there has always been at least one boy in with that.
