Tic - opening eyes very wide

Hi

My daughter had a coughing and throat tic last year, it went.

For the last few days I've noticed that she will open her eyes really wide while watching TV.

Could this be another tic?

Hi. Sounds like a tic. My son has them on and off and he has had one where he did that with his eyes.

@PJ67

Thank you.

I just hope it doesn't last very long as her previous tic lasted 10 months.

I know, I found them very stressful to watch. Hopefully it will go away soon.

Thank you.

Are tics a nervous thing do you know?

My son went through a whole range of tics from about the age of 9. Including the wide eye one and many many more. He would stop one and then another would start. This went on til he was about 15 and then stopped. He is now 18 with no tics at all.

He was never a nervous child but was quite an over thinker

@hopewardrobe

Thank you.

I'm glad your son's tics stopped.

I thought they had stopped for good, she was throat clearing and coughing for 10 months, nothing for a year and now the eyes opening wide.

I have been naughty and told her to stop opening her eyes, when I know I should just ignore it. It's a bit of a shock that she's started up again x

Yes my son was the same he would stop
For a few months and then start again with a new one. You're right best to just ignore them.

boble1 · 07/08/2019 23:33

Hi, yes I will try to ignore them.

She sees me staring at her, watching her all the time, so I must be making her aware of them.

My son had a cough one, usually when concentrating. Now he has a sniffing one. He's 5. It's really annoying!

My brother had a throat clearing tic that lasted about 18m before it passed. Then he used to open his eyes very wide for a few months. After that, it was squinting his eyes shut tight, again lasted a few months. It passed and I don't recall him having any tics at all by 14/15? He certainly doesn't have any as an adult.

My mum (and the rest of us) probably didn't deal with it very well though, she really, really struggled ignoring it and us kids used to tell him off constantly for it (we didn't know any better and copied our mum Blush). Probably made it all last a lot longer that it would have done if we ignored it.

And yes, my brother is very much an overthinker - still is. He's done extremely well for himself though, did well at school and uni, good career, and has no issues with anxiety, MH etc that I'm aware of. I remember my mother worrying it was all a sign of 'something' and that he wasn't 'normal' (this was nearly 40 years ago, not that it excuses it).

Thank you.

The paed at the local hospital said the coughing tic started after she had a virus, lost voice, sore throat and coughing.

Strangely enough, she had a virus last week and I noticed the eyes after this.

I'm going to try my hardest to stop watching her like a hawk and Im really hoping it stops before school starts again.

She will be 12 next Friday.

Actually, last summer she had a gasping one - she would take in a sharp gasp of air, which really made me jump!

Hello! I know this is an old thread but I came across it as my daughter has been widening her eyes whilst reading, using a tablet or concentrating. She’s nearly 10 and it’s only been a few days. How long did it go on for your daughter? Did you do anything that helped? I’m afraid kids at school will notice and she’ll be embarrassed… thanks :)

OP, Google pans/pandas it’s a condition people can get after having viral infections-tics can be a symptom.

My Son has tics-they come and go. They first appeared when he was 5 or 6 when we were in lockdown-he has Asd and bad anxiety and I was told they were anxiety induced. They stopped as soon as he went back to school. But a year or so later he started again. Now he gets them rarely but definitely when he’s more than normal anxious. He does a screeching one, an eye movement, a nose flick, head flick. We never ever bring an attention to it.
