Nits!! What is the best way to get rid of them?

Hi. Dd came home with nits last Thursday. DH went to the chemist for special shampoo which we applied and I used the nit comb with conditioner again morning and night the day after.
I’ve noticed lice in her head again this morning so reapplies the shampoo and used the nit comb again however half an hour later I’ve noticed eggs and lice still
moving on the crown of her head 😡 I’m thinking the shampoo wasn’t strong enough? Also I have found it hard to get all the lice out with the comb as sone are too small so have had to pick them out where I can. Can anyone recommend a sure fire way to kill them off please!!

What is the shampoo? Normally you put a product on and then leave it for a specified amount of time before washing off. Hedrin is supposed to be good as it suffocates them. I would maybe use the conditioner and comb every few days for 3 weeks as that is the lice life cycle

P.s. retreatment is required as the lotions don't tend to kill the eggs so you need to catch the hatchlings before they are big enough to breed

The product began with a L??? You did have to leave it on for 10 minutes, it was supposed to be a one treatment product.
Thanks I’ll try again in a few days🤞

I just don't believe that one application will deal with all eggs as well as lice. I would do the conditioner and comb treatment every few days until you no longer find any lice/eggs. I think it may have been Lyclear you used

Conditioner on wet hair and use a 'nitty gritty' comb. It has long prongs with spirals - great for catching even tiny lice and eggs. No need for chemical shampoos. And Mumsnet like the product too 😉👍🏻

I used Nitwits (I think Hedrin Once works the same way by suffocating the lice and breaking down the eggs). It said to leave on for 20mins but I left in overnight. It killed everything on me and three dc.

Combing works too but I had no one to comb me and i don’t think it’s possible to accurately comb your own hair.

We had them for the first time a couple of weeks ago, Boots own brand nit shampoo and nitty gritty comb, ended up doing two applications 3 or 5 days apart and all gone. Will be doing conditioner and nitty gritty comb weekly once DS1 starts school!

I've found the superdrug own brand spray works really well, along the the lice program for combing.

My dd caught bits last year at senior school. Her hair us very thick and long...I could have cried!! I used Hedrin.. didn't get Rudolf everything. Next time I just used lashings of cheap TeaTree conditioner from Lidl. Had to have another go as still found a live lice a week later. This time used loads of Tea Tree conditioner mixed with baby oil... a real slippery mess!! Combed with nutty gritty comb and was incredibly thorough...spent 3 hours combing it all through. Took small sections, used clips to keep combed hair off uncooked hair and dunked comb is a bowl of water and wiped with kitchen roll after each used. Was so laborious and felt doolally and quite tearful towards the end with the stress if being so thorough (sounds patheticBlush)....but I truly believe thorough combing ie every strand if hair is a must or you might as well not bother. . The one strand you miss will be the one with the egg on it....game over! Ut worked....she was finally clear!

Bits= nits!!

OMG....uncooked hairConfused.. ....must proof read, must proof read.....repeat til lesson learned Blush!!!

Well the best and most reliable treatment is to shave her head to the skin, and yours and DH's too. They can't stay if there's no hair for them to live in.

If that doesn't appeal then nitty gritty comb through damp hair with conditioner in it first, then use a leave-in treatment, then do another comb through. Repeat every 48-72 hours until vanquished.

That means you weren’t thorough enough with the combing I’m afraid. You have to be absolutely meticulous, going over every square inch of scalp. You need good light so you can really see every little bastard and get them out.

Over Easter I noticed my DD scratching her head and she was riddled with the fuckers. It was grim. I sectioned her hair into four pieces and, starting with the left side of her head, worked my way all around her head. It’s SO boring but combing really is the key. By all means use a lotion too (I did) but if you’re really thorough with the combing you’re more likely to get rid.

I also repeated the combing every day for a few days and then left it 2-3 days before doing it again, just to be sure they were really gone.

My daughters suffered from nits/headlice for years. One Sunday nite after our usual routine of conditioner and nit comb I went back over their hair with the nitty gritty comb! Omg all around the base of the neck and around the hairline I found hundreds more that I hadn’t even seen. You need to concentrate on those areas. Within two weeks we were totally nit/lice free first time in whole of primary school time. Nitty Gritty wins for me. Best of luck Op

Thanks all, I’ve bought a nitty gritty and been combing every night, I’m going to comb through for the next 21 days as most sites seem to say that’s the life cycle . Hopefully that will be the end of it Angry
