Toddler travel sickness

Poor DD (20months) has suddenly developed car sickness! 15 minutes into a journey and she goes all Vesuvius Sad. She's in an isofiix seat so can't move her position much although I (reluctantly) tried front rather than rear facing today to no avail

She now hates the car and gets hysterical as soon as she gets in which doesn't help. Been careful about pre-trip diet ( so light snacks etc) but doesn't help

Traveling abroad in South Africa in a few weeks ( car; no rail option ) and dreading it -Any ideas please ? She's little for her age (9.5kg) ; don't think wrist bands will fit and all meds I've seen are for older kids. Will see GP if needed but would like to be prepared

TIA

Sympathies both mine suffered although my eldest has completed grown out of it.

I don't think there is anything they can take before they are 2, we use Stugeron. Check out Phenergan, it needs to be prescribed and can make them sleepy.

Also make sure you have windows open, we used distraction a lot and I have also read that sitting on newspaper works?!

My toddler also gets car sick, not much advice other than the boots children’s wristbands are from 2 but are really small- my LG has used them since 20months and they do work sometimes for her, they were £8- worth a try?

Fantastic-thanks so much! Will try everything/anything

Especially relieved that growing out of it is likely Smile

You can try ice packs that she can put on her wrists for a bit. I suggest keeping the car as cold as possible. If she is close to the windows and the travelling speed is adequate, window down with face in the breeze can also help.

We got cyclizine prescribed by a private paediatrician. It needs precise calibrating of the dose, so we have to crush tablets, dissolve in water and use a syringe, but it works very well. Makes her a bit drowsy, so not very useful for day trips. A godsend for holiday travel, though.

MamaFlintstone · 30/07/2019 07:58

My DD is the same age and has been like this for a few months. Keeping the car really cold and being careful to drive really smoothly (steady braking, slowing right down for corners) seems to have helped - it wasn’t until I sat in the back with her that I realised how much bumpier it is compared to the front or that could just be my husband’s driving

We used phenergan (think that’s how it’s spelt) when I’m 18 month old kept getting travel sick. We had to speak to a pharmacist to get it and were refused by some. She’s 3 now and seems to have got over it so we no longer need it. Its ment to make kids drowsy but didn’t do that to my lot.

As an adult who gets car sick I second the advice to keep it cool.

Any recommendations for OTC drug options for a slightly older child (27m)? Thanks!

Quartz2208 · 30/07/2019 09:02

Ginger helps as well maybe get her the gingerbread biscuits as well.

NotquitewhatImeant · 30/07/2019 09:02

Poor you and poor your DD OP. Travel sickness is miserable. Mine was like this from about 12 months and the GP prescribed a tiny dose of anti sickness meds and then from 2 said phenergan liquid was fine.
