I have an almost 9 year old. She has not lost her bottom two front teeth. The dentist did an X-ray today and said we will leave it for a bit though it looks unlikely she has any adult teeth there.
Any one had any experience of this? Thank you :)

I'm an ex-dental nurse who worked in a dental hospital which specialises in restorative dentistry and orthodontics. It's actually surprisingly common! As none of this is her "fault" any treatment going forward should be free on the NHS even when she's an adult. They will try keep the baby teeth as long as possible but she should be given the option of bridges and then implants when she is fully developed. This will likely be a joint venture with orthodontics depending how the rest of her teeth grow in.

feedmewinenow · 25/07/2019 21:54

My 11 year old DD has this! Looks like we have 5 adult teeth in total. Luckily the top front teeth are adult and a couple of random ones which have yet to come through along the bottom but can be seen on x-Ray.
Like you, we only discovered the condition as she hadn't lost any teeth by 9. Still very early days for us as her two front teeth have now fallen out but are adult teeth. Recently she had the teeth to either side of these 'filled' with a kind of concrete substance to build them up as she was becoming conscious that her other teeth were so tiny. We've recently had a bottom tooth pushed out by one of the random adult teeth but it's not noticeable and the gap doesn't bother her.
We have a consultant appt in Aug (only waited 17 months for it!!!!) however our dentist is great and so far, not much we can ask as until the teeth fall out, there is little they can do! I was very upset at first but do you know what, she's healthy and it could be far worse! Plus we have a horrible sense of humour in our house so she may have the nickname 'Rylan'Blush

I'm 40 and have two missing adult teeth so the baby teeth never fell out. One of them got painful and troublesome when I was 34 and I had it removed and replaced with an implant. The other one is being monitored by my dentist and shows no signs of going anywhere. I think it really depends how many are missing, two shouldn't be a big issue.

Thank you so much for your replies everyone. I suppose its early days, so we will hope its just the two, or even that they will miraculously appear!
YerAWIZ I am glad to hear that about funding as an adult two.
Feedme - so your daughter had not lost any teeth by 9? Did the X-ray show straight away the extent of the problem?
RNBrie - that tooth is doing well! well done!

@Lostalot
Is your dentist going to refer your DC to the nearest paediatric dental dept (dental hospital usually) for an opinion?
If I'd discovered the 2 Lower central permanent incisors were congenitally absent on a 9 year old's radiograph ( btw is this a panoramic view or just that area?), a referral to a Consultant Paediatric dentist would be made immediately.

Lostalot · 29/07/2019 18:58

@Nemesia1264 - Thanks for your reply. I think it was just a view of that area though i am not sure. The dentist mentioned that my daughter would need a referral to the orthodontist at some point?
Perhaps I should make an appointment to speak to him for more details. Would the orthodontist be the same as the paediatric dental department?
Thank you :)

@Lostalot
I work in the NW, luckily we are well served by Dental Hospitals!
On referral to the Paediatric Consultant here, there would a Multi Discipline treatment planning clinic between the aforementioned Consultant(s) & the Hospital Orthodontic dept.
Hope this helps.
No harm in referral now.

Me and my sister have this, 4 each! Two top-one either side, and two bottom one either side.

I have two crowns on the top and two were eventually removed on the bottom.

My sister has them all removed and had a brace to move thing s together.

Can't tell with either of us. However I've always had to pay as an adult for the treatment!!

Lostalot · 29/07/2019 19:36

@Nemesia1264 - Thank you - i will speak to the dentist. We are in the NW too!

@Narkedoff - good to hear you can't tell now, shame about paying for treatment though!!

Yes. He has more teeth missing than actual adult teeth. He's just finished with braces moving his adult teeth around to make room for sticky bridges to cover the missing teeth at the front. His baby back teeth will last until he's about 30. So I'm hoping he can get dental implants. They're not on the nhs. He's been treated by the hospital and our dentist. I have just got braces to sort out my teeth. I have one tooth missing and a misshapen tooth right at the front. So I'm going to remove the misshapen one and move my two canine teeth into the gaps, grind them down and get the dentist to use composite to square them off.
It was a bit of a shock but there's lots of solutions to solve the problem.

SpankYouMuchly · 29/07/2019 19:43

He's 15 and I'm 46 if that helps.

Lostalot · 29/07/2019 21:35

Spankyoumuchly Thanks for your reply - when did you realise there was a problem? How long did he have the braces on? :)

I have this and so does DD14, I was treated at the Royal London and she is there now too. They are fantastic, I would push for an early referral, my dentist wouldn't X-ray DD and kept saying to wait so I went private and they referred her from there once the problem was confirmed.

Waiting times here are long and the treatment is long winded, she's had build ups done and we now have the braces on moving the spacing ready for the next stage.

Things have moved on so much since I was treated however I am 42 and still have the same bridges that were fitted when I was 22.

SpankYouMuchly · 30/07/2019 09:32

Our dentist sent him for an X-ray when he was 10. She had had suspicions before then as his two bottom middle teeth hadn't fallen out. Also because I had teeth missing. He was about 13 when the braces went on. Hes getting them taken off in the next two weeks. They are making a mould for the bridges I think and the retainer. He's missing the two teeth either side of front upper teeth and then two in the middle bottom and most back teeth. They can't move baby teeth with braces. But the baby teeth with hypodontia usually have longer roots. He had the two bottom baby teeth pulled out and their roots were bony looking.
I must admit I felt awful that he had this at the beginning. But now, as this part of treatment is nearly finished I don't think anyone will be able to tell. The only thing I need to do is save up for the dental implants. They don't do them on anyone under 18 as they wait until they have stopped growing. Which then means it has to be done privately.

uncomfortableslience and spankyoumuchly - thank you for your replies, it gives me some insight in to what might happen which is really useful:)
