Infection from thorn?

DS came home from school with a plaster on his leg on Friday where he’d got a thorn in his leg. The teacher had removed and cleaned it and was happy the whole thing was out. Today the area around the puncture is very red and swollen and feels hard to touch. Could there be something left in there or is this a normal reaction to a puncture wound?
Thanks for any advice

Yes there could indeed be something in there, not necessarily part of the thorn but grit or dirt or something else that has caused it to become infected.

Is it painful? Has your son got a temperature? I would draw a ring with biro around the red area so that you can see over time if the swelling is getting bigger. Remove the plaster and clean the wound with salt water. I'd also ring OOH for any further advice because there's a danger of sepsis from that.

Thank you, it’s only painful when he touched it. The plaster fell off yesterday and it isn’t weeping or looking sore just raised. I’ll draw on it and see how it looks. He feels ok
