My 2 year old started with Chicken Pox four days ago. He was fine wasn't really bothering him until last night.

He was awake all night crying and itching. He seems to have developed a lot on his genitals and bum. He's covered in this area and it's giving him a lot of discomfort.

I took him to the pharmacy and they advised calamine lotion and piriton but was wondering if there's anything else to help him.

I'm worried about infection as he's still in nappies. He is potty training so I've been putting him in his pull ups as they are thinner.

Baths

Lots and lots of baths with oats

(put the oats in a pair of old tights, knot the top so none escape, hold under running tap)

Poor thing! My kids were riddled with spots - worse on their eyelids! Cool baths, calamine.. . It will be over soon!

PrincessSarene · 08/07/2019 17:14

Yes, oat baths worked wonders for our DD. And my DH when he came down with it the following week!!

Constance1234 · 08/07/2019 17:15

We used Poxclin, it seemed to be really soothing and way more effective than calamine. It's a mousse so easier to apply than the lotion too, and it's also supposed to help reduce scarring. We also did oat baths. My poor boy had it on his privates too. Not fun!

poor little scrap, DS was the same earlier in the year - the thing that really helped him was bicarb of soda in the bath (a generous couple of tablespoons). It was recommended by his teacher - a mum to six - and it really helped with the itching.

Nothing else to add except lots of nappy free time

FannyFeatures · 08/07/2019 17:27

Another one for oat baths.

Try going without a nappy if possible, cotton pants under trousers if needed to let the pox breathe.

Aqueous/calomine 50:50 is very soothing, especially if kept in the fridge between uses and a dose of children's piriton to ease the itching.

Mummyto2munchkins · 08/07/2019 17:31

My DD 3 gave them to DS when he was 6 months old. He had them on his genitals. We had lots of baths and also Poxyclin.
The oharmacisr advised me that the calomine lotion dried the skin out more?
Poxyclin was amazing. Stopped the itching, and neither child is scarred.
Hope it goes away soon OP, it's awful to watch them itch x

Thanks all!

His pre-school suggested the B of soda bath when I told them he wouldn't be in.

It strange actually as I bought some oats yesterday for the first time in ages.

I'll try these. It's a shame as for the first few days I thought we were getting off lightly. He's literally got like five spots on his front, ten on his back, and two on his face and I swear there's double that on his privates.

Hi op it's awful isn't it. My dd was 10 months when she got it and she had it underneath her eyelids, all in her nappy, the only thing I could do for her was oat baths, l used calamine lotion and poxclin as well but really I had to just wait for it to go.

Katearty · 08/07/2019 22:02

So far so good after oat/b of soda bath.

Where can you get the poxclin from?

Constance1234 · 08/07/2019 22:32

From Boots :)

Katiet123 · 09/07/2019 11:16

Another one for Poxclin here, we got it from boots. Calamine seemed to dry the skin when they were healing which made him scratch more. This stuff was great.
