Clearing ear wax

I’ve asked for an audiology appointment for four year old DS2 because his behaviour is just awful a lot of the time and I want to rule out hearing as a possible cause of his ignoring most of what we ask him to do. The GP has made the referral, but says we have to clear the thick plugs of wax out of both of DS’s ears before the appointment or they won’t assess him, which makes perfect sense, but...they’re not shifting! The GP originally prescribed Waxol, which did nothing, and I’ve subsequently poured a deep-fat fryer’s equivalent of olive oil alternately into DS’s ears every night with nothing shifting. It has been four weeks now. When I look in with a light, all I see is a wall of brown. Will practice nurses syringe a four year old’s ears or is there something else they will tell me to try first??

There's a water jet thingy that they use. Safer than syringes. If you have tried a couple of things and failed, it's reasonable to ask for that.

I've had microsuction at a private clinic ... is that an option?

You can pay for suction, InHealth do it. Have you tried otex? Makes a lovely tingly fizzing in the ear too....

I don’t think DS2 would find the fizzing lovely, rickyst. He hates the olive oil only slightly less than the Waxol!

I’ll ask at the surgery to see if the practice nurses can do anything since we seem to have exhausted two options now.
