I'm not an expert but it does look mucus like which is associated with constipation. Are there any other signs of constipation at all?

BooseysMom · 20/06/2019 21:03

@Drogonssmile.. thanks for replying Smile no other symptoms except some difficulty going and the stools are hard and knobbly. Just given him 5ml lactulose ..will see what happens!

Difficulty going and hard bobbly stools are symptoms of constipation. Even if they are going to the loo daily. As is the mucus. In with the lactose.

BryanAdamsLeftAnkle · 20/06/2019 22:37

Needs to be drinking more fluids and eating more fibre. Can be caused by stress as well. Does he have access to the bathroom? Possibly with holding due to embarrassment?

If you Google type 2 stool or Bristol stool chart it will give you some good ideas to helping with mild constipation.

BooseysMom · 21/06/2019 13:40

@Pastaagain78; @BryanAdamsLeftAnkle.. thank you both for the advice. Well he's had lactulose last night but wouldn't take any this morn. He only ever has no.2 in the evenings. He's not good with veg but likes fruit so i try to get that down him! Totally refuses brown bread!
BryanAdamsLeftAnkle..i think what you say about him possibly holding it in during the day is a v good point as he won't go at school. He gets distressed if he has to go.

Ask your gp for movicol to take daily until he is right again

BooseysMom · 21/06/2019 13:46

@melissasummerfield..thanks for the advice. Never heard of that. Will phone GP as don't think the lactulose is working

BooseysMom No worries, my son had an impacted bowel as a toddler after which he was so scared to poo he would hold it in , so he ended up being on movicol for about 18 months until he got over the fear. Absolutely find after that and movicol has no risks or anything for long term use.

Hope you get him sorted out!

LeslieYep · 21/06/2019 17:41

We're just coming out the other side of this hopefully...

DD has always been a super pooper. Few times a day, no issues. Until she started passing rock solid behemoths. Poor girl was distraught, as was I at having to 'help'.

Tried lactulose as recommended by the pharmacist, but she wasn't constipated as such; still pooing at least once a day.

Ended up going to the walk in after about 5 days of fruit juice, fibre and lactulose not doing much and the Dr prescribed movicol. Opted for chocolate flavour, which she decided she didn't like, but mixed with her morning porridge has been amazing. Back to squishy poos within a couple of days!

BooseysMom · 22/06/2019 12:09

@melissasummerfield...thank you Smile.. Your poor DS. That sounds painful. Glad he's sorted now. DS had lactulose again and he had a poo which looked alot better and he didn't strain as much. So i'll carry on with it for a few days. It's just when i stop giving him in it might get bad again. He told me that he has been for a poo at school and there's me thinking he was holding it in!

@LeslieYep.. thanks. Oh no, your poor DD! I might try that if he gets bunged up again as the lactulose is nearly out of date and not sure it's any good although it does seem to have loosened them a bit. I'll have to remember to mix it with chocolate porridge!

BooseysMom · 22/06/2019 18:10

😂 Sorry I think your warning is clear enough, it's just me being morbidly curious 👍

LoHe19 · 22/06/2019 19:27

Lactulose can take a while to work effectively - the idea being you take it daily and it softens stools but you will need to encourage DC to drink more fluids to help it work as it’s meant too. It won’t suddenly make them go to the loo and clear constipation overnight

BooseysMom · 23/06/2019 19:01

Can't delete photo!

@LoHe19.. thank you. Third day of Lactulose and it's doing its job so far. Wonder how long i need to give it him. Thumbs up to the more fluids! I'm always on at him now!Smile

If they suffer from constipation quite frequently you may want to consider keeping them on a maintenance dose but check with Dr or HV. We kept a diary too and learnt bananas and bread caused our DD to back up a bit so are now more cautious. She also had a problem over Christmas where she ate so much meat (mainly veggie diet as she goes full time to a childminder whose veggie) that we had to keep her on it for over a month to keep things regular and moving!

BooseysMom · 24/06/2019 22:00

@LoHe19.. thanks. He's terrible at eating veg but does like apples. He had three in a day recently! He hasn't been today at all so must be backed up again even with the lactulose.

@BooseysMom our DD was born with a very sensitive gag reflex. As a result she couldn’t eat food til she was over 1 (could only have purées). She’s come a long way but still struggles with a lot of fruits, especially hard fruits and raw veg is a no. Therefore she can get backed up. We try many many ways to get fruit in! She often has purées still shop bought or home made. I can get veg in to her more successfully but also with home made hidden veg sauces she has with pasta. We had a lot of help from the dieticians who had lots of helpful suggestions - things I’d never considered. If she’s really bad I’ll try innocent smoothies, some fruit juice (cloudy apple) or pouches of prunes. Hope it moves soon! X

BooseysMom · 25/06/2019 19:52

@LoHe19..your poor DD..I've never heard of that. Does she have to take anything for it or can it just be managed with diet?
DS had a good no.2 tonight after nothing yesterday so def clearing out now!
