So we went to Asia to visit family for 2 weeks during the easter holidays, 3 days in my 7y/o DD, 2y/o DS and I all got the dreaded runny tummy. I didn't really think too much about it and thought it was par for the course as it was such a drastic change in climate and food etc.
Myself and ds recovered as soon as we got back home but dd is still suffering 2.5 months later. The GP requested a stool test, which came back clear, the 2nd GP I took her to said she'd probably had an infection which has caused her to become sensitive to lactose.
After cutting out all lactose from her diet she is STILL pooping all the time and will most likely have to have a blood test to investigate further.
Has anyone else had similar experiences or any advice?

@Luna87 Has DD had episodes before, or is this completely new? Could it be a wheat (or gluten) intolerance, or IBS? Sometimes a virus can kick start things like that... might be worth looking into if it doesn't clear up.
Hope DD feels better soon, best wishes xx

Coeliac disease?

Ohyesiam · 17/06/2019 21:04

Yes, I never got well from deli belly. One of my house mates was a student medical herbalist, she got me an appointment at their training clinic. I got a bottle of foul brown liquid ( could have had capsules but can’t swallow them) and it was resolved within a week. I had lost almost 2 stone, and it felt like my guts just rejected all food.
The professional body running the training was called National Institute of Medical Herbalists, I just googled and they have a register do you could find a local practitioner.

What did the GP test the stool for? Have they taken advice from hospital of tropical medicine?

Luna87 · 17/06/2019 21:12

@BristolGinger she's never had a problem with her gut before apart from the odd stomach bug from school 😔 I hope it resolves quickly, it's really getting her down now x

I think she was tested for various infections, by the time she actually allowed me to retrieve a sample (she didn't like the thought of it, and didn't let me take one for weeks) there was nothing showing in it. As far as I know there are no hospitals involved, just been told to organise a blood test if the lacto free diet didn't help

@ohyesiam I'll have a look online, we're at the point of trying anything now

I also thought of Coeliac disease. Does.she have any other symptoms - tiredness, lack of energy, stomach pain?

Ohyesiam · 17/06/2019 21:21

Luna87 I think that’s the point lots of people get to before seeing an alternative type practitioner!
I think there are some things that traditional medicine is brilliant at, and some that it just hasn’t got a clue, and that’s where some of the other stuff can come in useful.

Hope your poor dd gets some improvement soon.

I would get ask the gp to get advice from tropical medicine or infectious diseases at the hospital.
i had the same thing years ago and required antibiotics to shift it.

My son had a bad tummy bug which led to a gluten intolerance. Took a while to work out, though thankfully our local hospital was brilliant. We had to cut out all gluten for 12 months, which was incredibly hard. Then slowly re-introduced it. He's fine now. Btw, first thing they suggested was dairy. We cut that out for two weeks, but no improve. Then cut out gluten, son was better within days.

You need to ask your GP did they advise the lab that your son had travelled to Asia? If they did not you may need another stool sample tested
