Can any physiotherapists give me some dislocated finger recovery advice please

DS (11) managed to dislocate his little finger playing football a few weeks ago. At the time, it was put back into place, and strapped to his ring finger. It's been strapped ever since (obviously changing the strapping daily!)

He had a check up a couple of weeks ago and he couldn't really move his finger much so he was referred for physiotherapy. The first appointment has just come through and it's not until the end of July Sad

I have a couple of concerns. Firstly, it seems a long time (over 2 months) between the injury and the first appointment and I'm worried that without any proper exercises in that time, it could delay healing. We were told to keep the strapping away from his knuckle, so the finger can move as much as possible, which we do so it's not completely immobile but it's just getting general day to day movement, not specific exercises. Is there anything he could/should be doing while we wait for the appointment?

Secondly, we've been told that he should not be playing any contact sport at the moment, which DS is really struggling with as he's an active, sporty person! He's obviously not playing football and won't until he gets the all clear but I don't know what else he should be doing. For example, I kept him off Scouts last week as they were playing Ultimate Frisbee. This week is games in the woods and I'm really unsure whether he should go or not. What about sports day? Swimming?! Canoeing?

I asked the person (not sure if she was a nurse, physio or what!) when I phoned the hospital and she just said if we were told no sports then that meant no sports until he'd actually been seen. Which I totally appreciate as obviously the most important thing is that his finger heals quickly and well, but he seems to be missing out on a hell of a lot. His last primary school sports day is coming up soon and it would be a real shame if he couldn't participate.
