Tummy troubles - breastfed baby

Hi all 😊 DS is four months old, EBF and suffers terribly with his tummy. He constantly needs to pass wind/poop and is always screaming in pain. I feel terrible as he is rarely happy. He has explosive poops around 3 times a day sometimes more and they are very runny poops. He has to strain so hard sometimes for hours before managing to pass wind or poop. He is always drawing his legs up and arching his back with a high pitched scream. We help him to poop by doing bicycle legs, massage ect. We have an appointment at the hospital soon, I just wondered if anyone has experienced this before. He is gaining weight really well so doctors say it's not an allergy. Due to the pain he never really sleeps during the day as he wakes up screaming minutes after dropping off. He brings up burps fine after every feed. Any advice would be welcome. TIA x

Poor bub, and you! It sounds like you are doing everything you can to make him comfortable.

Has he been checked for a tongue tie (in addition to the newborn check by the hospital as they often miss it). It could be worth asking your HV or a lactation consultant to check again as he might be taking in extra air during feeds, although he is gaining weight well so that indicates no TT. Could just be worth ruling it out though.

I hope it all settles for you soon!

So just an update.. after refusing to leave hospital until he was throughly checked it's actually not his tummy that was troubling him. He has an anorectal malformation and needs surgery. I'm so glad I kept persisting. We were told everything from colic to lactose intolerence. Just goes to show that mummy instincts are always right. I'm so glad we have answers now, just sad it took 4 months to get there. Thanks for the replies x
