Should I wash all newborn clothes before born?

I know this sounds silly, but I am a first time mum and due in a months time. I've bought brand new packaged clothes for my baby, but a few people have recommended I hand wash every single item before I put it on my baby, I completely understand why.. but did you do this and feel it was necessary? I have hundreds of items now..

I washed everything. Definitely not by hand though, can’t imagine why that’s any better than the machine.
Ditto everyone else about not washing everything in case you need to return too small stuff.

I washed anything that would go directly against her skin. Only for the first six months or so.

helpmum2003 · 09/06/2019 17:10

I didn't and mine had no skin problems despite me having awful eczema as a baby. One has consequently developed asthma so allergic genes.

Be aware that non bio often has more bleaching agents in which can be an issue more than the enzymes in bio.

I guess it partly depends on how much time you have! Personally I wouldn't lose any sleep over it....

I wash anything new for dd and always will. It's coated in pesticides and fungicides and has been touched and tried on by any number of people. Tbh I wash any new clothes in our household regardless of who they're for.

Lol no it wasn’t “growapenisitis” 😂😂. It was actually the other way around but didn’t want to be recognised by family I know are on here. I couldn’t put dresses on my boy 😂. I gave them all to a relative who was having a girl so they weren’t thrown away.

I work in retail, you will very rarely meet someone who works in retail who wears new clothes without washing them first.

Wash only what you need for the first few days, just the essentials. Keep everything else in the packets. Ideally, sellotape or attach receipts or gift receipts to them asap. Otherwise you won't be able to find them if you need them.

Same goes for any bedding, wash essentials but leave new stuff in the packets until you know if you need them or not. As above, attach it tape receipts to make returns easier.

No, you don't need to do this anymore, it's perfectly safe to put them straight on baby.
I double checked as DS needed smaller bits when born and we were in hospital an hour away for over a week so no way to wash things first.
If you feel you must then I'd wait until after baby is born and see what fits. Nothing worse than a load of clothes you can't use.

Theladynextdoor · 09/06/2019 20:25

I did and then dd was born extremely tiny, way way way smaller than expected. She was under 5lbs at full term and my baby before her had been a whopper at 10lbs 2oz.
Nothing fitted and she was ready for discharge a few hours after being born. My mum had to do a quick dash to the supermarket over the road for some prem baby clothes and they went straight on her so we could leave.
She was fine.

vgiraffe · 09/06/2019 20:45

I guess it depends on the baby. I did for both mine. When DD was a bit older, I put clothes straight on her a couple of times and she came out in a rash. She did have eczema as a baby so probably just sensitive skin too.

QueenBeex · 09/06/2019 20:48

Yes i would. I'm planning on washing all baby clothes a month or so before my due date.

MeadowHay · 09/06/2019 20:49

No. DD is 1 and I never did this at all. She never had any ill effects or eczema or anything from it. And I have eczema and it runs in the family.

Comefromaway · 09/06/2019 20:49

No in case you have an unexpectedly large or small baby and have to return clothes that don’t fit.

LizzieSiddal · 09/06/2019 20:50

I did and continued until they were about 3.
My thinking was that the item of clothing could have been on a very dirty floor.

Shelbybear · 09/06/2019 20:57

I had heard of it and considered it for a minute then thought em no, what a waste.

I must say I don't think clothes are ever as nice as when they are first worn.

MrsXyzAbc · 09/06/2019 21:06

Yes I washed everything and then packed it away in advance. Bit time consuming but better safe than sorry

drspouse · 09/06/2019 21:14

We didn't with DS but then we found that DD got a rash from unwashed clothes so anything new to her* got washed.

*Note we did not throw away all blue clothes.

MissDai5y · 09/06/2019 22:38

I did machine wash everything new for the first few months but dd has had plenty straight out of the packaging since and it's not caused any bother.

Tbh, I loved hanging out, folding and putting into drawers all the new clothes in preparation. Probably wouldn't get as much enjoyment the second time around as I won't have the spare time but it did help.make everything seem more real.

TeaMe · 28/06/2019 20:30

Yes, I did. Still do now actually with 21mo
