Pubic hair on 7.5 year old daughter

My daughter has been using roll on deo on her underarms for about a year now as we had really noticed she needed it. She also has discharge in her knickers fairly often and last week whilst we were on holiday, she came to me quite distressed saying she was growing hair from her bottom. I had a look and there are a few tufts of pubic hair there. She is 8 in October and is tall for her age, so I wouldn't be too surprised if she was a fairly early developer, saying that, I was almost 14 when I started my periods. I'm unsure if I should take her to the doctors for this, or if it's not unusual. She's a very sensitive soul and I don't want to alarm her or make her think there is something wrong if it's just me being paranoid, I'm just so surprised given I was so late, I still wouldn't have been expecting anything for a couple of years at least. Has anyone had any experience of this?

Yes l have heard of it , was a Paeds nurse for 38 yrs till l recently retired. It is called precocious puberty. Take her to the GP she needs her puberty delaying until she is a little older imho. Nothing too concerning for you just take her and they will refer her to a Paediatrician and they will do tests and treat her with medication, sometimes there is no obvious cause . Try not to worry , here is a link to the NHS site for it , Good luck l am sure everything will be fine

Thank you for your post, it is very helpful. I'm gutted for her, she is far too young to be experiencing these changes really, she was so upset when she found the hairs. I'll see when I can get her into the doctors about it.

May be worth you talking to the doctor before you take her then not much needs to be said in front of her which may alarm her? Maybe a telephone appointment?

I am worried for the the same reason from my daughter who is turning 7 in 15 days. Would anyone be able to share their experience and how it turned out for their DD?

@Worriedmom2013 we took our daughter to the doctor and she was referred to a consultant at hospital who took blood (levels were all fine) and checked her over, didn't seem overly concerned as the only real "symptom" of precocious puberty was the hair. She had a follow up scheduled for 6 months after the original appointment which was then delayed due to Covid, she ended up getting seen last month by which time she was just about to turn 9 the following day. They seemed perfectly happy with her, no further developments aside from we are noticing greasy hair creeping in, but the consultant did say even if there were more signs 8/9 isn't outside their scope of "normal". I would advise taking your daughter to the doctors as the blood test is the key to finding out what's going on really. The nurses are really good and tell you to come in early so they can put numbing cream on, they gave her a little iPad with a game to play on while they took the blood to distract her and she was fine (despite being scared beforehand). Good luck, I hope it goes ok.

Mine too is about to start tests. She's just turned 6

Thanks so much for your response! Glad to know that your daughter is progressing very slowly on this and all her tests were normal. We don’t want these girls to grow up so quick at such a young age. They are still babies!
I am seeing a paediatric endocrinologist and hopefully she ll run some tests over the next week and I will have some answers. Did they do the bone age X-ray for your daughter ?

Totallyaddictedtoshoes · 18/11/2020 20:10

They didn't x ray no, they were happy with her height and weight tracking the same centile and the results of her blood test. Good luck with your daughter, I hope she doesn't worry too much about the appointment (you too!)
