6 day old weepy eye

DS can't open his left eye because it's been a bit sticky and I've just looked at him to see bright yellow liquid dripping out of his eye towards his nose. My first baby had a blocked tear duct but I'm worried this is different. His eyelid is red

If you are breastfeeding wipe the crustiness away with cooled boiled water and then breast milk.

GaraMedouar · 04/06/2019 08:32

Yep - breast milk in the eye will do wonders. Marvellous stuff.

MustardScreams · 04/06/2019 08:33

Thirding the breastmilk. I used it on myself when I had conjunctivitis and it cleared it up within 2 days. Wonder stuff!

Youvegotafriendinme · 04/06/2019 08:33

Came on to say the same thing. My DS had the same about the same age. Breastmilk on a cotton wipe within 2 days completely gone.

Bluebluered · 04/06/2019 08:38

Came to say breastmilk too. I was using breastmilk on my kid’s eyes until the eldest was about age 8 or 9. Us women are amazing.

samanthajonespr · 04/06/2019 10:32

I'm not breastfeeding ☹️
Women are truly amazing, curse my flat nipples!!

I have flat nipples and bf for 10 and 12 months, so if you want to do it, please ask for help and you might be able to! Congratulations on your lovely baby. Cooled boiled water would be my second choice after breast milk and gently massaging the under eye area with the tip of your pinky on your non dominant hand.

underneaththeash · 04/06/2019 20:54

Is the white part of the eye red at all OP?

foreverhanging · 04/06/2019 20:55

Hi op my daughter had this. They said to use breast milk or cooled boiled water and cotton wool to wipe it throughout the day. I wasn't bf so cooled boiled water it was. It did go away eventually

samanthajonespr · 04/06/2019 21:18

Thank you everybody, will do cooled boiled water on cotton wool balls. It's calmed a bit on his left eye but has now started in his right!
His eyes aren't actually red so hopefully not conjunctivitis

DS was born with sticky eyes that leaked. I found breast milk helped a little bit but didn't really do much, and neither did the cooled booked water unless I also massaged the tear ducts. It would change between eyes as well and cleared up after a few months.

Poochnewbie · 04/06/2019 21:26

Please keep an eye on it. If it doesn’t clear up- get it checked. I’m not one to scaremonger but I’m speaking from a not very nice experience (which ended okay).

foreverhanging · 04/06/2019 21:34

My midwife told me that if it didn't improve within 5 days to take her to the gp so once you start cleaning it just keep an eye on if it changes at all

Legoroses · 04/06/2019 21:41

6 days old? I'd be checking with the out of hours GP.

Sticky eyes and a bit of gunk can be dealt with by cooled boiled water and cotton pads, but that's a fair bit of weepy discharge. Probably fine but with such a small baby, i would like a Dr to have a quick look.

Mine all had the gunky eye/blocked tear duct thing and the GP said the trick was to never leave any gunk in the eye - don't clean it to a schedule, just ensure it's always clear. And obvs, clean outwards from the tearduct corner and new cotton pad for each wipe.
