New born belly button

mrsfriskey · 03/06/2019 14:32

My son is 9 weeks old. (First baby) His cord stump fell off when he was 18 days old but his belly button is still weeping. At 6 weeks the health visitor said it was nothing to worry about. Last week we had our 8 week postnatal check up with the GP and quite frankly he was rubbish, barely asked any questions and hardly looked at my son when I mentioned somethings I was concerned about. I asked him to look at the button and explained how long the cord had been off and he just shrugged it off. But surely nearly 2 months is a long time for this to heal? Everything I read says it should take 7-10 days to heal. Am I right to be concerned?
Thank you in advance for any advice/experience with this.

It shouldnt still be weeping after this long. Have you been swabbing it with alcohol? Also make sure it isnt getting wet from the nappy. Thats what we were told to do (but that was back in the day!). I would go back to the GP and ask them to take a proper look at it if you arent comfortable trying the alcohol wipe thing for a few days first. Also, any sign of a temperature or any redness around the belly button, go straight in

Thank you. There's no redness or swelling and it does appear to be tender. We fold the nappy down so not to irritate it/get it wet. I've only used cooled boiled water as advised by the midwife not alcohol wipes. It seems to scan over then as soon as the scan comes off it weeps again.

Clean it with cotton wool and cooled boiled water. Go back to gp, we've just had similar with our 3 week old but it's all fine now.

Same for my DS, every time the scab came off it was a bit gunky- greeny yellowish colour. Scabbed up again each time. I think as long as it's not red, inflamed or smelly you're okay.

But as others have said take to GP, or perhaps your health visitor might be more helpful, if you're concerned.

Pop to a weigh clinic & HV will be able to advise.

Thank you everyone. I'm going to see the HV tomorrow
