Hello all,

Hoping for some advice - put 20 month DS to bed earlier in pyjamas and a 1 tog sleeping bag. Room quite warm so should have probably left the bag off.

Baby struggling to settle so went up after about an hour and he was really hot bless him - took his temp and it was 38 degrees. Took bag off, obviously.

Have gone up about 45 mins later and he's asleep but still with a temp of 38. Have opened a window and set a fan to blow the cool air in.

Could this just be that he got too hot? Or should I give calpol???

Am feeling quite anxious about this, so any advice would be great. Thank you xxx

I don't think getting too hot raises your body temp. How are you measuring it?

Biscusting · 01/06/2019 21:58

Time to give calpol and keep an eye on him. Take the temperature again 20-30min after giving calpol. It should come down quite quickly

Yeh I would give calpol. Being hot wouldn't raise his temp that much I wouldn't think

Calpol.

Keep the room cool but make sure he's not in a draught. The fan might be a bit much tbh.

A warm room doesn't raise internal temperature that much, otherwise we'd all be running fevers on holiday in Spain etc. Give some calpol and check again in 20-30 minutes to see if it's lowering.

Calpol, recheck.

Also, I've found this useful as a guide to temperatures and bedtime wear

Thanks for advising me everyone - we had a night of a couple of doses of calpol, but his temp has now been OK since around 4am.

What would I do without mumsnet?

I don't think a temperature of 38 in an otherwise well toddler in a hot bedroom is cause for concern in itself. Anything up to 37.5 or so is considered a completely normal temperature, so it's only very slightly raised.

There's no need to use Calpol to regulate a mild temperature unless the child is in obvious discomfort. A raised temperature is our body's way of fighting infection (bugs don't thrive in a higher than normal body temp).

Worry about a fever if it's approaching 40 and not reducing with Calpol, if a fever persists for a number of days or if the child seems worryingly unwell - not responding, breathing problems, not drinking, etc.

Hope your LO is back to normal now :)
