Hypospadias experience

Hi all,
We've just found out that our sons surgery will be in less than 4 months. Whilst I've done endless research about his condition and the operation, there isn't much out there about personal experiences and recovery.

I'd love to hear from people who have experience in this, the good, the bad and the ugly. I just want to be as prepared as possible I hate the unknown!

My biggest worry is the aftercare at home and them coming back from theatre and saying he needs two operations rather than just the one.

My brother had this and all I can say is that 30 odd years on he's fine and has a daughter so I presume everything is fully functional! I remember my parents being far more worried than my brother was, he was around 2 or 3 and basically was spoiled rotten at the hospital. Good luck and try not to worry xxx

My son is awaiting this surgery when he turns 1 ile be watching this thread as I'm chewed to bits about the op Thanks

My DS had his op when he was about 18 months. The op took about 1hr 20 mins.

Recovery mostly went well & we just kept up his painkillers. It did take quite a while to heal completely & he did get some antibiotics as it's so hard to keep it clean.

Unfortunately there's a fistula so we're going back in for another op later this year but I'm hoping that it'll all over by the time he's 3 so he won't remember any of it.

I think it's only about 1 in 10 that need a second op (our typical luck) but the surgeon still feels that the first op was successful because its brought us 10 steps forward so this op should be a lot simpler.

My son is due his 3rd operation in few days time for this. Hopefully all should be sorted by the time he is 3.
Just make sure you have plenty of pain relief at home and take away any ride on toys as not allowed on them for couple of weeks.

DS1 had his first surgery at 13 months (about 3 hours) and his second just before he was 2. Both times he had a catheter in for a week afterwards which was a pain only in terms of practicalities. I was shocked each time how little he needed in terms of pain relief afterwards. DS2 had surgery about 3 or 4 months ago aged 3 and I was far more concerned as he's out of nappies and so it would have been much harder with a catheter. Happily when they got him into theatre they found that it wasn't as bad as they'd thought so it was a fairly quick surgery, no catheter needed and he's still got foreskin!

DS2 had surgery last year at almost 2. We were told he'd need a 2 stage op, but luckily once they'd started the op it was easier than thought and all done in one (though about 3-4 hours). He recovered really well, though was a nightmare to get painkillers into. I would have asked for suppositories if I'd known it was possible, particulrly before they removed the dressing which was the worst part for him. Changing pooey nappies was a nightmare but only for about 2 weeks. A year later and no problems since. Aesthetically it looks a bit lumpy, but the surgeon said it's scar tissue and hopeful it will go over time. All in all it went much better than i worried it might. Best of luck with your son's op

Thank you all so much for your messages it really helps to hear other peoples experiences.

Our surgeon has said it's a moderate case however, once they've correct the chordee the hypospadias may become a severe case (it's currently only 2-3mm from where it should be) but I'm hopeful.

I'm such an organised and structured person so the thought of the unknown is horrible for me.

My DS had his surgery at 10 months, it wasn’t too severe a case and went very well. The op itself was long and they cosmetically repaired his foreskin as well. He is now 7 and we’ve not had any problems. Good luck OP.

Aww thank you, that makes me a little more relaxed. I know hes in good hands and they will do their very best I'm just worried about further issues so its reassuring to hear your LB hasn't had any further issues
