Will my daughter get Chicken pox

Laurenshepley · 28/05/2019 21:41

Hi there,

I’m Hoping someone out there can put my mind at rest. Basically my friend bought her son over at the weekend and I noticed he had chicken pox. He was briefly playing with my 18 month old daughter who has not had chicken pox. He left as soon as I noticed them (approx 50 minutes of being at my house)

Today I took my daughter to boots to get the chicken pox vaccine and the pharmacist advised I was wasting my time and money and she may already have it. Although a lot of blogs online say if I vaccinate within 3 days there’s a good chance she won’t get it

Totally freaking out, we go on holiday to turkey on Saturday with 45 members of our friends and family as I’m getting married next Friday :(

Someone please help

Has anyone been vaccinated after exposure and it’s been successful / unsuccessful

Thank you

It can be passed on from being in the same room for 15 minutes. Did she get the injection? Incubation period is 10-21 days so you wouldn't know for a while if the injection is successful

dementedpixie · 28/05/2019 22:36

Why on earth did she bring her poxy child to your house anyway?!

SpideyMom · 28/05/2019 23:15

I would have said not to worry about her getting them but considering your holiday and wedding I can understand your worry.
Why did your friend bring her child around? My son had them two weeks ago and still has the scabs. 14 kids ended up being off across the 2 classes.

I know they are highly contagious so she would be incredibly lucky to not have got them.

Attache · 29/05/2019 02:45

Anecdotally a huge number of sibling pairs seem to get it exactly 2 weeks apart. I'm not sure of the most common incubation period from a single exposure, but it's unlikely to be shorter than that. It would be a complete PITA if she has active spots when you are due to fly home though.

I've read it's not actually all that infectious so with one 50 min exposure you might get lucky. It went through our nursery like wildfire but the children were obviously together for much longer periods of time.

Tavannach · 29/05/2019 03:49

That's really tough You need to talk to your GP, or at the very least phone 111 for advice.

Laurenshepley · 30/05/2019 12:27

Yes my daughter had the injections around 68 hours after being exposed to them. My friend said she didn’t know he had spots until I identified them. As you can all imagine I’m absolutely worried sick. She’s been run down for a week or so with a cold ect so her immune system would have been pretty low when he came around

my son was run down with a cold before his appeared. The night before he was particularly quiet and didnt want to play or eat.

I only discovered them the following morning when he was dressing himself. He had put his top on back to front. If I hadn't of noticed his top, he would have gone to school with them.

Laurenshepley · 30/05/2019 12:53

Currently waiting for a nurse to call me back after calling 111. I’m driving myself crazy 😭

dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 12:59

Why did you call 111? She'll either get it or she wont.

SpideyMom · 30/05/2019 13:00

unfortunately there is nothing you can do now. she will either get it or she wont. I cant see how 111 can help, because if she has got it, there is nothing that can stop it

scaredofthecity · 30/05/2019 13:03

As others have stated it has a long incubation period. My DD got it a few weeks after my DS.
So even if she has got it, you should be ok to fly out.

scaredofthecity · 30/05/2019 13:05

...
It's most infectious before spots appear, after that it is spread by direct contact with the fluid inside pustules.

I don't know about the vaccine but you may be lucky.

Fingers crossed for you

user27495824 · 30/05/2019 13:07

How long are you in turkey for? Good news is she wont have them or be contagious by the time you fly out so you can still have your wedding. But you definitely need insurance to cover extending your holiday and changing your flights back as she will probably get them just before you are due back. If your child has a cold now, is there a chance she already has them? Does she go to nursery or playgroups? Spring is the height of chicken pox season, so you should really have had her vaccinated the moment you booked your wedding.

dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 13:07

That's not quite true. It's still airborne after the spots come out but will also spread through fluid from the vesicles

Laurenshepley · 30/05/2019 13:20

I actually rang her nursery today and luckily there has been no cases reported by parents.
We fly exactly 7 days after exposure and then my wedding is 13 days after exposure. We are in turkey for 10 nights. I’ve rang travel insurance and ensured all the right cover is in place I just don’t want my baby unwell abroad and especially on my wedding day :(
Still waiting for 111 to call me back to give me abit more information on the vaccine she had on Tuesday. I’ve read a lot of things online and it’s all different information

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 13:29

From what I've read you give it within 3 days to try to stop it from occurring and 3-5 days to minimise the severity

Laurenshepley · 30/05/2019 13:34

That’s what I read on many sites to but the pharmacist who gave her the jab told me I was wasting my money as it won’t do anything if she’s already caught it. :(

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 13:36

It would only have been at incubation stage when she got the vaccine so maybe that helps stop it

DumbledorePlum · 30/05/2019 13:37

My kids were exposed (via classmates) to chicken pox, as soon as I found out we got the vaccine. I think it was between 3-5 days after exposure. Neither of them came down with the pox, and over half of my daughters class went on to have them over the following weeks. She was absolutely fine, so I think the jab did its job. Fingers crossed for you!!

Laurenshepley · 30/05/2019 13:52

You don’t realise how much your message has put my mind at rest. We got the jab within 3 days of exposure so finger crossed for us too. Thank you

Firstly congratulations on your upcoming marriage, how exciting! Given this information I can understand why you're concerned your LO may have chickenpox

Unfortunately chickenpox is very contagious and It wouldn't be worth having the vaccine as your LO may already have the infection. It can take 1-3 weeks for your LO to develop the spots once the child has been exposed to the virus.

There obviously however is a chance that the other child may not have been contagious if the spots had crusted over. In this case your LO may not have contracted the Virus. Also very young children can appear to cope quiet well with the virus and bounce back quiet quickly.

All the best

dementedpixie · 30/05/2019 21:41

OP said the other parent hadn't noticed the spots which implies they were just starting to come out. Vaccination apparently can stop or minimise infection if given within 3-5 days after exposure

user27495824 · 31/05/2019 20:14

Don't worry too much. More often than not chicken pox is mild and with the vaccine it would likely be very mild. Both my kids who have had it didn't have fevers and didn't even itch despite being covered head to toe. Take a blow up paddling pool if you don't have a private pool, that and sun would help with the spots I imagine. Just make sure all of your wedding party have had it. Take piriton and poxcilin too.

I did read that the chance of catching it is over 90% if in the same room as someone contagious for over 10 minutes. However, one of mine came out in spots at an NCT baby meet up when she was 6 months old and she'd been lying next to 6 other babies for an hour, and none of them got it. They were all under 1 though.
