DD's eyes completely different to mine and her dad's?

Not sure if I'm posting in the right place, but just wanted to see if anyone else has experience of this. I have brown eyes and DD's dad has blue. DD was born with dark blue eyes that faded to a very light sky blue and they stayed this way for some time until I noticed a slight tinge of brown appearing around the iris but only in certain lights. She is now almost two and her eyes have completely changed from bright blue to a sort of grey Hazel colour. To give more specific detail, they have a dark blue ring around the outside, the a blue/greyish layer blending into a hazel/brown colour in the middle. I'm just curious if anyone else has had the same as its very strange that her eyes are so different to both of us. I wondered whether it could be a genetic mutation or something and wondered how common this is? We were given 50/50 change of her eyes being either blue or brown so are baffled that they are now greyish/Hazel! Hope someonecan shed some light!

My partner and I both have hazel green eyes. Dd has grey with a navy ring , ds has dark brown ( which to be fair mine were at that age).

I imagine your dds will keep changing till she’s grown.

I think the one in 4 chance, brown being dominant as taught in biology at school is only a bit of the picture.

isthatabloborwhat · 27/05/2019 19:37

I have grey eyes, DH has blue and DD1 has eyes that sound pretty much the same as your dd's, a mix of hazel, blue, green and the dark ring round the iris.

We didn't know where her eye colour came from either, until she stood right next to MIL in front of a mirror one day Grin

Lifewithliv18 · 27/05/2019 19:43

Thank you both for responding! Oh that's interesting that you say that as my dad has very simikar eyes to her so perhaps it can skip a generation? And I didn't realise their eyes continue to change so late, so maybe could even become more brown like mine?

I've no idea how it works but my eyes are green... parents blue/brown.

DH has brown eyes but both DC have blue eyes. Confused

ArnoldBee · 27/05/2019 19:51

Eye colour is far more complicated than it is taught at school.

BrillyPribble · 27/05/2019 19:52

We have exactly the same in our family. My eyes are brown, DHs are very blue. Two of our children have green/grey/blue/brown eye mixes which is technically hazel I think. No-one else in either family has anything like it, my side are all brown, DHs side are all blue.

aweedropofsancerre · 27/05/2019 19:54

I have 3DC with brown eyes like myself and OH however I have one with lovely grey blue eyes....he is the spitting image of his grandfather who has the same colour of eyes

OKBobble · 27/05/2019 19:56

My parents both have brown as does my younger sister and I have green eyes. DH has dark blue and our DS has light blue.

Notashandyta · 27/05/2019 19:59

I have blue eyes, dh has brown eyes.

Ds has dark green eyes, dd1 has light blue eyes with a hint of turquoise and dd2 has hazel eyes.

They all started blue and didn't reach final colour until past two

LoafofSellotape · 27/05/2019 20:01

Dh and I have grey blue eyes and ds has deep conker brown.

OddBoots · 27/05/2019 20:02

One brown eyed parent and one blue eyed can give an combination, as can two hazel and/or green. I have green and dh has hazel but ds has dark brown.

moreismore · 27/05/2019 20:03

Hazel eyes happen when you have a ‘defective’ blue eyed gene.

You have pairs of genes, one from each parent.
You need two blue genes for blue eyes.
You can have two brown or one brown and one blue for brown eyes, as brown is dominant.

You just have one brown and one blue = brown eyes.
Your DH must have two blue = blue eyes.

Your DD has inherited a blue gene from each of you but at least one is ‘defective’ = hazel eyes.

I’m sure it’s more complicated than that but I think that’s basically right!

SoyDora · 27/05/2019 20:03

It’s nowhere near as simple as the way eye colour is taught at school!

sugarbum · 27/05/2019 20:04

eye colours do change, as does hair. I'm clueless about genetics.
All I I know is that dh had Sandy hair ( now white!) and light blue eyes.
I have dark brown hair and brown eyes.
DS1 originally had red hair and bright blue eyes, then hair went bright blonde and curly, now hair mid brown/ red and straight, and has green eyes.
DS2 originally had gold hair, then white blonde and bright blue eyes, now dirty dark blonde hair and green eyes.

troppibambini · 27/05/2019 20:08

My dad had dark brown eyes
My mum has green eyes
I have pale grey blue eyes. I didn't think it was possible, no one in my close family has blue eyes just me.

MayFayner · 27/05/2019 20:08

That’s interesting moreismore

DD has hazel eyes. Mine are blue and her dad’s are dark brown.

xSharonNeedlesx · 27/05/2019 20:13

My eyes are blue, dh’s are brown.

Dd1 has blue eyes (but a different shade to mine)

Dd2 has browny/greenish eyes depending on the light with one eye having a definitive streak of brown in it.

StCharlotte · 27/05/2019 20:13

DH has brown eyes but both DC have blue eyes. Confused

My parents both had brown eyes as do three of my siblings. My sister and I have blue eyes. Not unusual I don't suppose.

GreenEyedDevil · 27/05/2019 20:14

All my family have blue eyes, even back to my great great grandparents. Mine were blue until I was eight years old and then they change to green, and they have a thick dark green ring around them. Same with hair colour, mine is nothing like my parents.

azulmariposa · 27/05/2019 20:17

Exh has hazel eyes, I have green. Dd has chocolatey brown eyes.
Genetics are more complicated than they tell us at school.

Mummyoftwo91 · 27/05/2019 20:21

My Dh has blue eyes, only one in the whole family they all have brown both sides. our ds got his blue eyes, my dd has my green eyes

Mesmeri · 27/05/2019 20:21

I find this really interesting! I have blue eyes (and 2 blue eyed parents) dh has brown eyes (one blue-eyed parent, one brown eyed)... 3 of our kids have brown eyes, the youngest is blue eyed.

BUT, I used to think blue eyes were dominant, partly because I grew up in a very blue eyed area, but also because whilst my grandfather had blue eyes and my grandmother had brown eyes, all 3 of their children have blue eyes... surely that's quite unusual, if brown is dominant? Obviously, one of my grandmother's parents must have been blue eyed, but even so that's the same scenario as dh and I but our 1st 3 are brown eyed, as you'd expect.

Makes me wonder if there are any other factors contributing to the dominance. Wish I understood more about genetics, it's so interesting...

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 27/05/2019 20:23

brown eyes are genetically brown but other colours are all genetically blue

green/hazel/grey ....all blue gene with a defective blue gene which give the variety

...I think that's how it works :o

MummyBear2352 · 27/05/2019 20:50

I thought that if 2 parents had blue eyes and brown eyes that their child wouldn’t have green eyes (I read it would either have blue or green 50/50 but...... my dh has the most gorgeous green eyes and his mam had brown and dad had blue?!! I ready that was pretty much impossible but ckearjy that’s wrong!

bettyboo40 · 27/05/2019 21:11

My DH has green eyes, mine are dark brown. My DD has blue!
